GENERAL Description
Caterpillar D-398B Diesel Engines
• Four engines installed in main generator room.
• Each engine is installed on its own skid base and then mounted on a special sound isolation bed.
• V-12
• 1200 RPM
• 970 Horsepower
Kato Brushless Synchronous Main AC Generators
• 600 KW
• 600 VAC
• 3 Phase
• 60 Hertz
• 1200 RPM
• Air Cooled
• 0.7 Lagging Power Factor
• Stator has three-phase winding.
• Rotor has salient field poles that are excited by direct current.
• The revolving elements used to supply direct current to the field winding of the generator are:
• Exciter rotor.
• Solid state rectifier assembly.

• Field pole windings on the rotor.
• The generators) are provided with regulation and compensation for parallel operation from the GEM (Generator Engine Module).
Main Generator AC Filter Modules
• Mounted along side each generator.
• Filters out spurious voltage spikes (unwanted frequencies) of the fifth and seventh harmonic that is produced by the main propulsion power converter units.
General Electric 600 Volt AC Switchboard
• Provides control, protection and distribution of 600 VAC to the 600/450 VAC stepdown transformers.
• Supplied by constant frequency main AC power generator(s).
• The 600 VAC bus can be split or combined with any or all of the main generators operating in parallel.
600-450 VAC Stepdown Transformers
• Three 600-450 VAC stepdown feed from 600 volt switchboard and feeds 450 volt ship's service switchboard.
• Located in the Main Generator Room (3-34-0).
• Used to back feed the 600 volt switchboard during periods the ship is utilizing shore power (required for the propulsion motor space heaters).
• Can operate in parallel.
• Complete with strip heaters.
General Electric 450 VAC Ship's Service Switchboard.
• Provide protection and distribution.
• Port Ship's Service Switchboard Section.
• Starboard Ship's Service Switchboard Section.
• Shore Power Section.
Shore Power Receptacles
• Two receptacles housed in common enclosure
• Two on deck 400 amp breakers housed in a common enclosure which includes a test panel.
• Various status lamp and alarms.
60 Hertz Special Power Motor-Generator System
• Local and Remote Control Panels
• Distribution Switchboard
• Two (stacked) Motor-Generator Sets
• Brushless Synchronous Motor:
• Input power - 450 VAC, 60 Hertz, 3 Phase •300 Horsepower, 1800 RPM
Chief Engineer Electrical System Overview Page: 3
• Brushless Synchronous Revolving Field Generator:
• Output power- 450 VAC, 60 Hertz, 3 Phase Special Power (SP).
•200 KW, 321 Amps
Caterpillar D-3408TH Emergency Diesel Engine
• Installed in the Emergency Switchboard and Generator Room (01-9-0).
• Automatic Start-Up upon loss of ship's service power.
• V-8
• 1800 RPM
• 400 Horsepower
Kato Brushless Synchronous Emergency AC Generator
• Output Power - 450 VAC, 60 Hertz, 3 phase.
• 250 KW
• 1800 RPM.
• Air Cooled.
• 0.8 Lagging Power Factor.
General Electric 450 VAC Emergency Switchboard.
• Located in the Emergency Switchboard and Generator Room (01-9-0).
• Provides control, protection and distribution of 450 VAC, 120 VAC, and 24
VDC power to emergency loads.
• Provides control to automatically start-up of EDG when 450 volt ship's service power is lost or when testing.
• Normally receives power from the 450 volt ship's service switchboard via a bus tie breaker.
• Receives power from the EDG during 450 volt ship's service power lost or during testing.
• Provides 24 VDC control power to the Main Diesel Generators and to the "Cold
Start" circuits.
• Under certain conditions they can supply EDG power to 450 volt ship's service switchboard but DO NOT ATTEMT TO PARALLEL WITH MAIN
DIESEL GENERATORS OR SHORE POWER.
Two Motor Control Centers (MCC)
MCC 1 A and 1 B located in the Main Generator Room (3-34-0).
MCC 2A and 2B located in the Main Propulsion Motor Room (3-52-01).
Powered from the 450 volt ship's service switchboard.
Lighting Transformer Automatic Bus Transfer (ABT) System
Located in the Main Propulsion Motor Room (3-52-01).
NORMAL supply from Port Ship' Service Switchboard, circuit breaker P428.
ALTRNATE supply from Starboard Ship's Service Switchboard, circuit breraker
P431.

Electronic Automatic Bus Transfer (ABT) System
• Located in Upper Deck Passageway.
• NORMAL supply from 60 Hertz Switchboard, circuit breaker SP406.
• ALTRNATE ("dirty power") supply from Emergnecy Switchboard, circuit breraker EP407.
