Project No. OR DOT 35(1) Highway 35 Safety Improvements at Meadow Creek & Mt Hood Meadows Ski Area

# General Technical Question Answer Date

1 X Is the highway poles and lighting going to be part of this project?

Highway poles and lighting are not part of the project.

2 X

I would like to clarify that slope reinforcement/shoring (such as soil nail walls) will be required only for the excavation to install culverts at the Meadows Creek (OR35) and Teacup Lake Rd locations. Will slope reinforcement/shoring be required for any other work in this area?

The temporary support structures are provided for the excavation to install the reinforced box culvert under OR35 as well as along the temporary widening constructed in Stage I. The temporary support structures along the temporary widening are required to prevent fill within the existing Meadows Creek to allow staged construction outside the in‐water work period. See sheets H.3 and H.5.

3 X

On Sheet G.9, the Watertight Box Joint Section Detail displays a shiplap style of joint, with a mastic rope and a foam gasket. This is not typical, nor really recommend for a staggered split culvert application. Historically, in between section lengths, we use a male/female keyway, and apply the use of a butyl tape. Would this suffice?

Bid according to the contract. Requests for change will be evaluated after contract award.

4 X Can teacup be closed for the construction of the new teacup culvert? We cannot find any mention of it in traffic control plans or specs

Yes teacup can be closed. 2/25/19

5 X

Is there a staging area available? Can spoils be stockpiled in the provided area?

The ODOT maintenance yard adjacent to the site is available. See subsection 105.04 No, not without approval by ODOT staff.

Contact information is provided in the special contract requirements.

3. Does the FHA have any available rock sources or dirt dump sites available for use with this project? No

2/25/19

X

H sheets reference temp paving, is this to be paid under bid item A0540 Or is it incidental to traffic control?

Yes, the summary of quantities and sheet H.1 show 21 tons estimated for this work.

No this is not incidental

2/25/19

8 X

Doe the temp paving referenced on H sheets need to be removed at the end of project?

If the temp pavement meets the requirements of the contact and is incorporated into the final work, than it does not need to be removed. If is located outside the limits of the final paving, it needs to be removed.

9 X

Bid item 420 is for unclassified borrow, the summary of quantities says this is the D sheets.

We can find no mention of unclassified borrow on the d sheets. Where is the unclassified borrow to be placed? Is it the road widening material?

This material is to be used to complete construction of the embankment after all useable roadway excavation has by used.

2/25/19

10 X

Spec 602 lists structural backfill as incidental to the item. 602.02 list section 209 for structure excavation and Backfill. Spec 209 lists 704.03 for backfill material. Is 704.03 (a) the correct material? Or 704.03(b)?

This depends on it’s specific application;

Use 704.03 (a) For Structures and pipes other than plastic pipe: Use 704.03 (b) For reinforced slopes and plastic pipe.

2/25/19

11 X

Sheet G.5 shows select borrow directly above the new culvert. Does this extend into the roadwidening shoulder area? Or is it limited to inside the existing road prism?

Select borrow is to be placed as shown for the entire road widening area over the new culvert (inlet to outlet). 2/25/19

12 X

Sheet G.5 shows select borrow directly above the new culvert. If open excavation is used instead of shoring, would the fill area outside of directly above the culvert also be required to be select borrow?

Bid according to the detail and the requirements of Section 209‐ Structure excavation and backfill. Any request for change will be evaluated after contract award.

Bid Item A0740 – Guardrail System MGS, Type 4, Class B Wood Posts (ODOT 31”, Type 2A) needs further clarification. Calling for a Type 4 relates to a corrosion resistant weathering steel in the Federal Spec book. Class B refers to 10‐ guage steel as well. However ODOT 31” Type 2a is 12‐guage steel.

There is also nothing in the special provisions that refers to either staining of the rail or powder coating that you would expect to see for the Terminal System, Type MGS Tangent.

Please confirm that you want 10‐guage guardrail that is weathered (corten) steel and that the terminals are to be standard galvanized.

The typical sections also show that the face of guardrail to the hinge point of the shoulder is 2’.

Are longer posts than the standard shown on Plan sheet D.5 required?

The contractor will need to bid for providing 10‐guage, weathering steel guardrail per the FHWA bid item. The Terminals are to be standard galvanized. Longer posts are not required.
