QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

TIOGA PASS CA FTNP YOSE 17(3)

3/6/14

1. Are cross-sections and/or proposed and existing topo available for work under the roadway excavation item? Is the intent that all cut will be placed as fill somewhere, off-hauled, etc.?

There is no survey or mapping information available for the Water Tank Access Road. See sheet A-10 for survey and design activities to be performed by the contractor for construction of the Water Tank

Access Road. Available mapping information for the Tuolumne Grove Parking Area is shown on sheets

K5 and K6. There will be waste material from the excavation at the Tuolumne Grove Parking Area, and it is assumed that waste will be generated for the construction of the Water Tank Access Road. Waste may be used for curb backfill or as directed by the CO. Excess waste can be hauled to the Olmsted Pit

Staging Area.

2. Can a tank be set-up at both locations and supplied with water pumped from Tenaya Lake?

No. Water tank can only be set up at Tenaya Lake. There is “No Staging, No Work” at the site on sheet C-3. The Water Tank Access Road shown on sheet C-3 is a new road which will provide better access to an existing NPS water tank site for potable water. The vegetation is so dense, the tank is not visible in these pictures. There is not enough water for construction, however, so no Klein tank or water supply is allowed.

3. Is the location shown on the plans for an additional water source not included with specifications?

Water Tank Road refers to a new access road (Sta 76+20) to an existing water tank for local potable water. This new road is providing flatter access than the current access road near Sta

81+62. This is not an additional water source. Plans and specifications are correct concerning water sources.

4. If the access road is supposed to constructed at Tenaya Lake per specifications, will the layout/dimensions be the same as what’s shown on the plans (Sht C3)?

The water tank access road is to be constructed at the location shown on sheet C-3. There is no

“water tank access road” that requires construction at Tenaya Lake. The SCRs describe where a tank can be placed near the southwest corner of the lake. No site disturbance is allowed to install a contractor supplied Klein tank at that location.

5. Item #63306-1700 (4"x4" wood posts) and SCR 633.01: Please double-check with NPS-

Yosemite regarding signs posts dimensions. The minimum size they use in areas where snowplows operate is 4"x6". We installed some signs on 4"x4" posts per contract in 2010 and during the first winter several of them were broken by the impact of snow and ice from the plowing operations.

4” x 6” is correct. An amendment will be issued with new plans sheets to show 4x6.

6. Items #63301-000 & 63304-0200 (permanent sign panels) and SCR 633.05: Has the wrapping of the edges of the sign panels with protective film actually been accomplished in a durable manner anywhere in the past? Every manufacturer of protective film has told us that their films will not stick to the face of their (same) films for long because the films are engineered to prevent anything from adhering thereto in a permanent manner, including preventing an additonal layer of the same film from adhering. And none of the sign fabrication companies

(including Zumar, the largest in the world) are equipped to wrap the edges as the spec reads.

How is this spec to be met?

An amendment will be issued to clarify verbiage in the Special Contract Requirements sections

633.05 Panels. We will be deleting some text to provide clarification. 633.05 will read as follows:

633.05 Panels. Delete the first paragraph and substitute the

following:

Use type III, IV, VIII, IX, or XI retroreflective sheeting. For permanent sign panels, use type

L-1 or L-3 letters, numerals, arrows, symbols, and borders. Cut panels to size and shape and drill or punch all holes. Make panels flat and free of buckles, warp, dents, cockles, burrs, and other defects.

Paint the backs of all signs and all metal posts such that no exposed metal surface is not painted. Paint these exposed metal surfaces “Yosemite Brown”.
