2-428 changes in loading are sensed by the pulse width modulator, resulting in a change of switching signal pulse width to keep the output voltage constant. The reference voltage and power supply output voltage can be adjusted using the +/-15 V ADJUST potentiometer.
2.3.4.6.3.2 Inverter and Inverter Drive. The pulse width modulator produces a variable pulse width, 4OKHz signal that is applied to inverter drive transformer T301. Transformer T301 provides isolation between the pulse width modulator and inverter drive circuit. The inverter drive circuit uses the secondary outputs of T301 to produce the switching signals applied to the inverter. The switching signals cause the inverter to switch +150 V and -150 V across the primary of power transformer T102 in alternate half cycles. Between each half cycle, there is a dead time when both switching signals are inactive. This dead time ensures that the inverter transistors go off and are not switched across T102 simultaneously. The secondary outputs of T101 provide stepped down voltages that are used as input power to the two linear power supply sections.
2.3.4.6.3.3 Current Limiting. Since the output current of power transformer T102 is directly proportional to its primary current, output current can be sensed by sensing the primary current of power transformer T102. The inverter switching voltages are returned to COMMON through current sense transformer T101. This induces a current in the secondary of T101 proportional to the T102 primary current. The secondary of T101 is applied to the current sense circuit. When the secondary current of T101 exceeds a preset level, the current sense circuit activates the CURRENT LIMIT signal, which forces the pulse width modulator to lower the pulse width of the switching signals. This action limits the available output current to safe levels.
2.3.4.6.4 Linear Power Supply Sections. The two linear power supply sections of the +15/-15 V module B power supply provide +15 V at 9 A and -15 V at 9 A to dual card rack A4. The operation of each linear power supply section is essentially identical to the operation of the -15 V section of the - 15/+100 V module A power supply with the exception of dc operating parameters. See figure 11-44.
2.3.4.7 +5 V Module C Power Supplies. See figure 11-43, sheets 4 and 5. Four identical +5 V module C power supplies are contained in multivoltage power supply PS1. The four power supplies are arranged as two parallel–connected pairs. The +5 V module C power supply one is paralleled with +5 V module C power supply two (group two), and +5 V module C power supply three is paralleled with +5 V module C power supply four (part of group three). The group two pair provides +5 V at 180 A to one– half of dual card rack A4, and through 5V/9A AUX FUSE F1, +5 V at 9 A to target i–f panel assembly A1. The group three pair provides +5 V at 180 A to the other half of dual card rack A4. Each pair uses current sharing circuitry, a common shutdown signal, series–connected BIT output signals, and parallel–connected dc power and sense lines to act essentially as one power supply. Each +5 V module C power supply uses an offline, half–bridge type inverter driven by a pulse width modulator. This configuration, coupled with remote voltage sensing achieves high–power output and excellent voltage regulation. The current limiting and overvoltage protection circuitry provide power supply protection, while BIT circuitry provides both remote and local fault indications. The following paragraphs contain descriptions of the operation of +5 V module C power supply one, and how it operates with +5 V module C power supply two. The operation of +5 V module C power supplies three and four is identical and is not discussed.
2.3.4.7.1 Input Power. The main power input to the +5 V module C power supply is the 208 V, three–phase ac from the module POWER ON/OFF toggle switch SW101 (see figure 11-43, sheet 4). To ensure continuous operation of the power supply during momentary fluctuations or complete loss (for less than 15 seconds) of main power, a battery power input is also provided.
2.3.4.7.1.1 Main Power. The 208 V, three–phase ac input power from the module POWER ON/OFF toggle switch SW101 is applied to the line rectifier. The line rectifier full–wave rectifies the ac input

2-429 power to produce a 300 V dc level that is applied through the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) filter and surge limiter to the input filter for ripple reduction. The EMI filter attenuates the level of EMI conducted into the input power lines. The surge limiter reduces inrush current caused by the initial charging of the input filter capacitors. The 300 V dc level is split by the input filter to provide the +150 V and -150 V (referenced to COMMON) dc levels applied to the inverter.
2.3.4.7.1.2 Battery Power. If the main power input is lost, the BATTERY (+) and BATTERY (-) inputs provide 280 V dc power to the inverter. The BATTERY (+) and BATTERY (-) power inputs are applied to the EMI filter and surge limiter through two diodes. During normal main power operation, these two diodes are reverse biased and no power is drawn from the battery. If the main power input drops causing the line rectifier output to drop below 280 V dc, the two diodes become forward biased allowing the battery to supply power to the inverter through the EMI filter, surge limiter, and input filter.
2.3.4.7.2 Logic Power. The pulse width modulator and BIT circuit require dc power at a voltage level much lower than the 150 V levels supplied to the inverter. Separate logic power circuitry is included to power the pulse width modulator and BIT circuit.
2.3.4.7.2.1 Normal Operation. The PHC input power line is applied to +20 V supply transformer T104 (returned to NEUTRAL). Transformer T104 steps down the PHC voltage to provide ac voltage to the +20 V supply rectifier. The +20 V supply rectifier full–wave rectifies the ac to produce a +20 V dc level that is applied to the delay circuit and filter. The delay circuit and filter performs two functions. One function is to filter the +20 V dc to provide LOGIC POWER to the pulse width modulator and BIT circuit;
the other is to provide the DELAY START signal to the pulse width modulator. The DELAY START signal is a time–delayed signal generated with a resistor–capacitor time constant, and is used to inhibit the pulse width modulator output for a short time. This time delay allows the power inputs to the inverter to reach the full level before the switching signals are applied.
2.3.4.7.2.2 Battery Operation. During battery operation (loss of main power), the PHC power input to +20 V supply transformer T104 is lost, resulting in a loss of output from the +20 V supply rectifier. A secondary output of power transformer T101 and the auxiliary supply rectifier are used to provide the dc power to the delay circuit and filter during battery operation. The pin 9 and 10 secondary output of power transformer T101 is rectified to produce a voltage of approximately +18 V dc. This voltage is applied in parallel to the output of the +20 V supply rectifier through a diode and POWER ON/OFF toggle switch SW101. During normal main power operation, the auxiliary supply rectifier provides no power to the delay circuit and filter (diode isolated). If main power drops, resulting in the +20 V supply rectifier output voltage to drop below +18 V dc, the diode becomes forward biased and the auxiliary supply rectifier supplies power to the delay circuit and filter.
2.3.4.7.3 Pulse Width Modulation. The pulse width modulator regulates the output voltage level and limits the current level of the +5 V module C power supply by varying the pulse width of the switching signals applied to the inverter. The switching signal pulse width is varied in response to voltage and current feedback signals from voltage divider and current sense circuits. The following paragraphs provide descriptions of voltage regulation, current limiting, current sharing, inverter drive, and inverter operation.
2.3.4.7.3.1 Voltage Regulation. The output voltage level of the +5 V module C power supply is directly proportional to the pulse width of the inverter switching signals. By varying the switching signal pulse width, the output voltage is also varied. The pulse width modulator varies the switching signal pulse width in relation to the level of the proportional voltage from the voltage divider. The proportional voltage represents the actual output voltage of the power supply, and is developed by the voltage divider from the +SENSE and -SENSE input signals. These sense input signals are connected to the
TI 6310.26 08/16/2006
2-430 power supply outputs; and therefore, represent the actual voltage present across the power supply. The pulse width modulator compares the proportional voltage, and uses the difference between the two to set the switching signal pulse width. The result of this action is that under varying load conditions, the output voltage remains constant. A resistor is connected between each sense input and its corresponding output line to limit the power supply voltage in the event that a sense line becomes disconnected from the output. The changes in output voltage due to changes in loading are sensed by the pulse width modulator, resulting in a change of switching signal pulse width to keep the output voltage constant. The reference voltage and power supply output voltage can be adjusted using the +5 V ADJ potentiometer located on the front panel.
2.3.4.7.3.2 Inverter and Inverter Drive. The pulse width modulator produces a variable pulse width, 40KHz signal that is applied to inverter drive transformer T301. Transformer T301 provides isolation between the pulse width modulator and inverter drive circuit. The inverter drive circuit uses the secondary outputs of inverter drive transformer T301 to produce the switching signals applied to the inverter. The switching signals cause the inverter to switch +150 V and -150 V across the primary of power transformer T101 in alternate half cycles. Between each half cycle there is a dead time when both switching signals are inactive. This dead time ensures that the inverter transistors are not switched across power transformer T101 simultaneously. The secondary outputs of power transformer T101 provide a stepped down voltage that is rectified and filtered to produce the +5 V /100 A output. This output is connected in parallel with the +5 V/100 A output of +5 V module C power supply two to produce the +5 V/180 A and +5 V/9 A outputs.
2.3.4.7.3.3 Current Limiting. Since the power supply output current is directly proportional to the primary current of power transformer T101, output current can be sensed by sensing the T101 primary current. The inverter switching voltages are returned to COMMON through load sharing transformer T103 (discussed in the following paragraph) and current sense transformer T102. This induces a current in the secondary of current sense transformer T102 proportional to the primary current in power transformer T101. The secondary of current sense transformer T102 is applied to the current sense circuit. When the secondary current of T102 exceeds a preset level, the current sense circuit activates the CURRENT LIMIT signal, which forces the pulse width modulator to lower the pulse width of the switching signals. This action limits the available output current to safe levels.
2.3.4.7.3.4 Current Sharing. Since the outputs of +5 V module C power supplies one and two are connected in parallel, current sharing circuitry is included to ensure that the power supply modules share output current equally. The inverter switching voltages are returned to COMMON through load sharing transformer T103. This induces a current in the secondary of load sharing transformer T103 proportional to the primary current in power transformer T101 (and therefore, proportional to output current). The secondary output of load sharing transformer T103 is applied to the current sharing circuit with the center tap (SHARING) connected to the center tap of the load sharing transformer of the other power supply module. The secondary output of load sharing transformer T103 is rectified and filtered to generate the CURRENT CONTROL signal. This signal is used by the pulse width modulator to control the switching signal pulse width (and therefore, the output current) to vary in direct proportion to the CURRENT CONTROL signal level. When the power supply module output currents are equal, no current flows in the SHARING signal line, and the CURRENT CONTROL signal level does not change.
If the current output of +5 V module C power supply one becomes higher than the current output of +5 V module C power supply two, current flows in the SHARING signal line. This causes the CURRENT CONTROL signal level in +5 V module C power supply one to lower, and the CURRENT CONTROL signal level in +5 V module C power supply two to rise until the output currents are equal and no current flows in the SHARING signal line. An opposite action occurs when the output current of +5 V module C power supply one becomes lower than the output current of +5 V module C power supply two.

2.3.4.7.3.5 Overvoltage Protection. The +5 V module C power supply is protected from output overvoltage by an overvoltage sensing circuit, overvoltage SCR, and a shutdown SCR. The overvoltage circuit monitors the sense signals and is activated when the voltage rises to between +6.25 Vand +6.75 V. When the overvoltage sensed threshold is reached, the overvoltage circuit provides the gate drive to fire the overvoltage SCR. This shorts the power supply output through the overvoltage SCR and a low value resistor. When the overvoltage SCR fires, the voltage across the low value resistor fires the shutdown SCR. When the shutdown SCR fires, the pulse width modulator is disabled by the SHUTDOWN signal shutting down the inverter drive. This shuts down the power supply output. The SHUTDOWN signals of each +5 V module C power supply that are connected in parallel are connected together. This ensures that if one +5 V module C power supply in the pair were to shutdown, the other would be shutdown also. The overvoltage condition is reset by switching POWER ON/OFF toggle switch SW101 to the OFF position, and then to the ON position.
2.3.4.7.3.6 BIT Circuit. The BIT circuit monitors the sense signals (+SENSE and -SENSE) for overvoltage or undervoltage conditions, and provides drive signals to an LED and optoisolator. The +5 V FLT LED provides a local indication of a power supply fault, and the optoisolator provides signals to the RMS (Unit 3) for monitoring. The BIT circuit compares the sense voltage to an adjustable reference voltage (adjusted using the reference adjustment potentiometer). When the sense voltage is within acceptable limits, (figure 11-43, sheet 1) the fault LED is out and the optoisolator LED is driven on causing its output phototransistor to conduct. If the sense voltage falls outside acceptable limits, the fault LED lights and the drive is removed from the optoisolator LED, cutting off its output phototransistor. The optoisolator outputs of +5 V module C power supplies one and two are connected in series. This ensures that if one +5 V module C power supply develops a fault, a fault is indicated for the pair. The +5 V FLT LED is located on the front panel of multivoltage power supply PS1 along with test points +5 V/100A TP2 and +5 V RTN TP1.
2.3.4.8 +15 V Module D Power Supply. See figure 11-43, sheets 6 and 7. The +15 V module D power supply provides +15 V at 13.5 A to target i–f panel assembly A1, target receiver assembly A2, frequency generator rack assembly A3, and interface panel A8. The operation of the +15 V module D power supply is essentially identical to the operation of the -15 V section of the -15/+100 V module A power supply with the exception of the dc operating parameters. See figure 11-44.
2.3.4.9 Battery Charger. See figure 11-43, sheet 8. The battery charger produces +265 V to +305 V at up to 0.1 A for charging the battery in multivoltage power supply PS1. The battery charger output is fuse–protected and both voltage– and current–regulated. A description of the operation of the battery charger is contained in the following paragraphs.
2.3.4.9.1 Input Power. The input power to the battery charger is 208 V, three–phase ac from circuit breaker CB1. The 208 V, three–phase ac power is applied to the primary of power transformer T1 through fuses FB1F1 through FB1F3. Power transformer T1 produces a stepped up secondary output for main power, and a stepped down secondary output for logic power.
2.3.4.9.1.1 Main Power. The pin 5, 6, and 7 secondary output of power transformer T1 is applied to the rectifier and filter. The secondary output is rectified and filtered to produce the +350 V dc used by the pass transistors.
2.3.4.9.1.2 Logic Power. The linear voltage regulator and current regulator. require dc power at a much lower voltage than the +350 V dc supplied to the pass transistors. Power to the linear voltage regulator and current regulator is supplied by a secondary output of power transformer T1 and the +20 V rectifier and filter. The pin–8 and –9 secondary output of power transformer T1 is rectified and filtered by the +20 V rectifier and filter to produce the LOGIC POWER supplied to the linear voltage regulator
