About this file
This document is a set of geologic investigation files for the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project, specifically focusing on the Reach 1 San Juan River Intake and Pumping Plant site in New Mexico. The investigation includes multiple drill hole logs, test pit logs, and physical properties test results for soil and rock samples collected from the project area. The drilling and testing were conducted to assess the geological conditions and material properties for potential foundation and construction purposes.
The investigation involved 24 drill holes (DHR1-23-1 through DHR1-23-24) and several test pits (TPR1-23-1 through TPR1-23-15), which were drilled and excavated to depths ranging from 20 to 54 feet. The geological strata primarily consisted of Quaternary Alluvium (Qal) from 0-18.3 to 29.5 feet, overlying the Cretaceous Fruitland Formation (Kf) bedrock. Soil classifications varied but predominantly included silty sand, clayey sand, and lean clay with gravel, with specific particle size fractions and consistency limits documented. The physical properties tests analyzed characteristics such as liquid limit, plasticity index, specific gravity, and in-place density to support geotechnical assessment for the water supply project's infrastructure development.

Geologic standards and definitions used for rock quality and rock discontinuities are based on Bureau of Reclamation Engineering Geology Field Manual and drawing numbers 40-D-6493 and 40-D-6499.
Soil classification and descriptions are based on the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and Bureau of Reclamation procedures and guidelines as described in Geotechnical Branch Training Manuals numbers 4, 5, 6, and Designations USBR 5000 (laboratory classification) and USBR - 5005 (visual classification). These procedures are similar to ASTM D2487-11 and ASTM D2488-09A respectively.
Interpretations shown on geologic profiles are based on Test Pit, Drill Hole, outcrop, and field mapping data. Interpretations suggest general trends between data points and do not depict localized irregularities.
For the entire description of material, drilling or excavation method and conditions, exact locations of the hole, etc., see complete log.

FILL
Fill is composed of a combination of engineered/reworked river terrace and alluvial deposits, along with possible borrow material emplaced during construction. Fill is encountered under and around existing water conveyance structures and roads throughout the project. It is often composed of Clayey Sand (SC), Silty Sand (SM) Clayey Sand with Gravel (SC)g Silty Sand with Gravel (SM)g, etc, and may contain oversize particles including cobbles and boulders. See logs for more site-specific material descriptions.
Quaternary Alluvium
Quaternary alluvium consists of unconsolidated surficial deposits regardless of origin. It is derived from a variety of sources including slope wash, eolian and colluvial deposition as well as weathering and decomposition of in-place bedrock. Alluvium contains variable amounts of plastic to nonplastic fines and may contain sand, gravel, cobbles, and boulders on terraces and in river channels and flood plains. Numerous soil types are encountered, including Poorly Graded Sand (SP) Poorly graded sand with gravel (SP)g Silty Sand (SM), Silty Sand with Gravel (SM)g Clayey Sand (SC), Clayey Sand With Gravel (SC)g, Lean Clay with Sand (CL)s, Lean Clay (CL) Fat Clay (CH), etc. Oversize material such as cobbles and boulders are also encountered. See logs for more site-specific material descriptions.
Cretaceous Pictured Cliffs Sandstone
Pictured Cliffs Sandstone is composed of light brown to orange to gray, very fine- to medium-grained sandstone interbedded with minor gray siltstone and shale. The upper part consists of ledge-forming, moderately- to massively-bedded sandstone. The sandstone is calcareous, ferruginous, and exhibits cellular- to cavernous-weathering. The lower part consists of laminated to thinly bedded sandstone, shale and claystone. The sandstone is moderately soft (H5) and intensely weathered (W7) to hard (H3) and slightly weathered(W2). The shale and claystone are generally very soft (H7) and intensely weathered (W7) to moderately soft (H5) and moderately weathered (W5).
Cretaceous Fruitland Fromation
The Fruitland formation is composed of gray to brown to olive sandstone, dark gray to black carbonaceous shale and coal. Sandstone was the only Fruitland rock type encountered in the Reach 1 investigations. The sandstone is homogeneous, argillaceous, fine- to medium-grained, thickly to massively bedded, moderately hard (H4) to hard (H3) and slightly to moderately weathered (W4).
