RADON EXPLANATORY NOTES

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a radon action level of 4.0 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L). Occupied buildings with radon concentrations less than 4.0 pCi/L do not require radon mitigation; un-occupied buildings, or those buildings which are occupied only infrequently for brief periods of time, also do not require radon mitigation. Occupied buildings with radon concentrations greater than

4.0 pCi/L require radon mitigation and verification of radon reductions as soon as possible, with priority given to dormitories and student recreation buildings. Occupied buildings with radon concentrations greater than 20.0 pCi/L should be considered significant radon exposure hazards, and priority for mitigation should be given to buildings with these highly elevated radon concentrations.

Radon mitigation techniques include: (1) adjustment of the building HVAC system to create a positive pressure within the building; (2) sealing of foundation wall cracks, penetrations, or other openings;

(3) sealing crawlspace openings and sump pits; (4) installing an active subslab depressurization (ASD) system.

Primary overhead electrical power service enters the center from the west at two locations from utility-owned primary power overhead distribution lines along College Street. This service feeds pole-mounted step-down transformers with corresponding exterior building-mounted secondary utility meters for each individual building.

120/240V, 1-phase, 3 wire secondary service is utilized and additionally 120/208V, 3-phase, 4 wire is utilized for the HVAC equipment in Building 1.

Telephone Company

On-site Line Owner

Building 1 is utilized as the main service entrance and demarcation point for the main and off-center telephone system, and is where the main communication data closets are located. The off-center location has dedicated phone service from the main campus; a separate data service entry point/demarcation and data cabinet are located at the off-center location. The internet and long distance communication system is implemented and managed by the JCDC. VoIP system is not utilized anywhere on the center. The local calls are managed by CenturyLink (formerly Embarq). The data communication system hardware is manufactured by Cisco. Each main campus building has Cisco switches and CAT 5e network to connect nodes with the computers. Routers and switches in the main data closet, and at the off-site location, are UPS-protected. The center maintains 5 trunk lines and 15 dedicated phone lines. Cable TV service is provided by Adelphia Communications in the dormitories and recreation facilities. The main campus fire alarm is centrally monitored in Building 1. There is a separate fire and ADT security system in the off-center facility. The telephone system has limited public address capabilities.
