SUBJECT: Announcement regarding Summer Break 2016
1. Purpose. To inform the Job Corps community of a change to the student-leave policy:
the cessation of summer break.
2. Background. Summer break was originally designed to save money, provide professional development opportunities for center staff, and provide our students a break from training by coordinating Job Corps students’ leave with other students’ breaks. This system, however, does not model the workplace environment.
The Federal Managers Team has decided to cease offering a systemwide summer break, and instead implement an accrued-leave plan policy where students can earn and plan for their own leaves. This plan would better emulate the workplace. More information regarding this leave plan will be shared with the field when finalized. Winter break is not affected, and will continue to be scheduled as usual.
4. Action. Centers should not plan for a summer break this year. Students should be informed that a new student-leave policy will be implemented soon.
Addressees are to ensure this Information Notice is distributed to all appropriate staff.
5. Expiration Date. Until superseded.
6. Inquiries. Inquiries should be directed to Linda Marshall at (202) 693-3106 or marshall.linda@dol.gov.
