About this file

This PowerPoint presentation is a detailed economic development overview for the Greater Paducah region in Kentucky, focusing on workforce capabilities, infrastructure, and readiness for potential commercial and nuclear energy development. The presentation highlights the region's economic strengths, including 8% city population growth, over $200 million in new capital projects, and a comprehensive workforce development strategy supported by local educational institutions like MSU and UK College of Engineering.

The presentation specifically addresses the region's potential for data processing, hosting, and related services, revealing a labor shed with 36,000 potential candidates in the computing infrastructure sector. Key workforce statistics include a 50-mile labor area with 203,418 civilian labor force, median age of 42.1 years, and median household income of $55,470. The slides emphasize the area's nuclear readiness, significant power transmission infrastructure via Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), and strategic positioning for potential technology and energy sector investments, particularly aligning with the Department of Energy's Commercial AI & Energy Generation Infrastructure Program Request for Offer for the former Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant site.

Greater Paducah Labor Shed Source: JobsEQ, 2024Q1 Economic Overview for McCracken County, Kentucky American Community Survey 2018-2022

Based on data from JobsEQ, employer census, workforce attraction data, GPEDC has established its regional labor shed to be a 50 miles radius, as the community is drawing workers from three other states and with well-developed highway system, you are drawing workers from a few counties away. The majority of the zip codes represent river industry, but not all as Paducah companies have opportunities to hire remote workers and traveling healthcare workers.

Calvert City Mayfield Benton

This slide discusses the Outbound Commuter - McCracken County Residents who work outside of the county. There are 9,129 individuals driving to Calvert City, Mayfield, Benton, Wickliffe, Metropolis, and Murray for work. Nearly half are driving to jobs that pay more than $20 an hour. And separately, we know that 2k are driving to goods-producing jobs. While I can’t decipher with the data, I anticipate that they are driving for jobs that pay above McCracken County goods producing jobs. I’ve highlighted a opportunity here to offer tuition-free micro-credentials to outbound commuters. It will reduce their drive-time and potentially provide them employment opportunities with reindustrialization.
