Project Role: Project Manager and Sr. Hydrogeologist. Performed an evaluation of the potential effect of infiltration from three stormwater retention ponds on a nearby air sparge (AS) soil vapor extraction (SVE) soil remediation system using HYDRUS-1D to model infiltration from each pond during a 100 yr 24 hr and a 1000 yr 24 hr precipitation event and for 1 yr after each event. Infiltration at each pond was adjusted to include run off from the surrounding impervious drainage, and the “Sand” hydraulic parameters from the HYDRUS-1D soil catalog were selected for the unsaturated soil hydraulic properties. Annual precipitation and evaporation rates were applied to the 1 yr long time step following each 24 hr point precipitation event. HYDRUS-1D only provides model results within a single soil column. To address lateral extent of infiltration from the ponds, separate model runs for soil columns orientated at 22.5o, 45o, 60o, 65o, 75o, 85o, and 90o from vertical were performed in addition to a vertical soil column orientation. Model results for each pond after a 100 yr 24 hr and a 1000 yr 24 hr precipitation event indicated that infiltration from the ponds would not reach groundwater at 106 meters, that pond infiltration would not influence operation of the AS/SVE remediation system or encroach upon its zone of influence. Based on the model results, State regulators approved the construction plans for the retention ponds.
