CDM Smith is an employee-owned engineering and construction firm known for our legendary client service and smart solutions related to water, environmental, transportation, energy, and facilities. CDM Smith was founded in 1947 with a commitment to maintain the constant pursuit of excellence. CDM Smith also has a fully integrated construction arm, CDM Constructors Inc. (CCI) that has executed more than $2.5 billion of design-build work in water and wastewater, facilities, transportation, energy, remediation, and emergency response—making CDM Smith a top ranked global contractor.
More specifically, we have created a successful portfolio of work that includes projects ranging from site investigation, pilot studies, and remedial design/action to construction and operation. Services have included but are not limited to characterizing and remediating chlorinated solvent- and petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated sites such as optimizing in-situ remediation, characterization and remediation of fractured rock sites, complex site remediation, integrated site characterization, environmental molecular diagnostics, integrated DNAPL site strategy, mass flux and discharge, DNAPL and enhanced MNA bioremediation. CDM Smith has successfully implemented these projects across the arid and semiarid southwest and have extensive experience characterizing and remediating sites with deep groundwater and challenging conditions.
Remediation Activities & Services While completing numerous remediation designs throughout our 76-year history, CDM Smith has developed innovative technical approaches and new assessment and remediation technologies that achieve optimal results. As an industry leader, we have contributed to both standards and trends, including being one of the first firms to use onsite, real-time analysis/data interpretation tools to identify data gaps and to quantify contamination extent; electron microprobe techniques to determine contaminant source, type, and bioavailability; and multivariable statistical techniques to determine groundwater contamination sources—approaches now standard protocols. Key areas of expertise include:
• R&D / Industry Standards – CDM Smith has conducted more than $30M in applied R&D with EPA, DoD
Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) or Strategic Environmental R&D Program (SERDP) programs, Navy Environmental Sustainability Development to Integration (NESDI), Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) and universities on topics such as bioremediation, biogeochemical transformation, mixed chlorinated and recalcitrant contaminants, and DNAPL. We have also led development of 15 ITRC guidance documents and training on characterizing and remediating chlorinated solvent-contaminated sites.
• Conceptual Site Models – The basis for all remedy-decision-making, CDM Smith develops conceptual site models (CSMs) that represent site complexity with sufficient detail and at appropriate scales for each project. We leverage our experience using data acquisition methods and tools (grab sampling, soil/sediment borings, passive samplers, high-resolution site characterization tools, drones), data management and data analytics (ARC-GIS, ARC-HYDRO, Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ)
3D visualization, vapor-, hydraulic-, geochemical- contaminant fate, and transport modeling) to efficiently acquire/assess needed data so data quality meets criteria for intended use.
• State Environmental Agency Contractor – CDM Smith has decades of experience executing millions of dollars of scope for state agencies across the United States. For years, we have held a variety of “on-call” contracts with the environmental agencies in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, New York, New Jersey, South Carolina, North Carolina, Idaho, and Montana, among others.
• Superfund Sites – CDM Smith has completed nearly 2,000 assignments across 500 Superfund sites in all 10 EPA regions. Many of these projects had similar elements to sites within ADEQ’s portfolio and have included services ranging from remedial investigations, feasibility studies, and risk assessments to pilot testing, remedial design, construction, operation and monitoring of remedial actions.
• Soil & Groundwater Remediation – CDM Smith’s experience in investigating and developing designs for soil and groundwater remedial systems includes new and innovative technologies as well as traditional methods, in combinations that provide optimal reliability and cost effectiveness. Our design services include treatability testing, conceptual and preliminary designs, detailed drawings and specifications, and cost estimating.
• Working Environment / Site Conditions – Having completed more than 150,000 projects worldwide, CDM Smith is well versed in work during all seasons and in all conditions, including arid and semiarid environments. More specifically, we have extensive experience working with state and local government agencies, having completed more than 600 projects and task orders in Arizona and New Mexico alone. It should be noted that we also have valuable arid/semiarid experience in other portions of the United States that may not be expected, such as southern Idaho, Wyoming, central and eastern Oregon, and eastern Montana.
