About this file
This is a specification document for exterior painting work on Building 409 at Kahului Airport in Hawaii, associated with T-Hangar emergency door frame repairs. The project, identified as State Project No. CM1626-33, requires surface preparation and application of paint systems to structural steel substrates. The work includes all design, shop drawings, materials, labor, construction, placement, and finishing necessary to complete the exterior painting scope. The specification mandates compliance with MPI (Master Painters Institute) standards and the MPI Architectural Painting Specification Manual for all preparation and workmanship. Contractors must submit product data, samples for each paint system and color/gloss combination, and a current MPI Approved Product List with proposed products highlighted. Acceptable manufacturers include Benjamin Moore & Co. and Sherwin-Williams Company or approved equals.
The painting system specified for structural steel substrates follows the MPI EXT 5.1L schedule, consisting of three coats: a zinc-rich inorganic primer, an epoxy high-build intermediate coat, and a two-component polyurethane topcoat with pigmented gloss finish. All materials must comply with VOC limits established by local authorities and match existing colors. Surface preparation requires removal of rust and loose mill scale from steel substrates using methods recommended by the paint manufacturer, with careful attention to cleaning away dirt, oil, grease, and incompatible existing coatings. The contract work is measured and paid on a lump sum basis for item 09911 (Exterior Painting). Contractors must provide five percent extra materials, minimum one gallon of each color applied, packaged and labeled for storage. The owner reserves the right to conduct dry film thickness testing, with contractors responsible for costs if results show non-compliance with manufacturer specifications and required to apply additional coats at their expense.
