About this file
This file is a 2024 Curbside Recycling & Refuse Newsletter and Calendar published by the City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works, Bureau of Environmental Services. The newsletter serves the Central-Eastern district and provides comprehensive guidance on curbside collection procedures, accepted materials, and collection schedules. The document outlines recycling guidelines for plastic containers, cardboard, glass, metal containers, and mixed paper, along with specifications for yard debris collection scheduled for April 20th and November 2nd. Curbside recycling is collected every other week, with specific regulations requiring items to be set out between 6:00 p.m. the night before collection and 6:00 a.m. the day of collection. Household hazardous waste recycling is available five times annually (March 9, May 11, July 12, September 14, and November 9), with electronic waste recycling available at dedicated drop-off locations. The calendar includes all 12 months of 2024 with color-coded designations for holidays (red), recycling pickup days (blue), no regular trash pickup (gray), and yard debris pickup (green). Eight federal holidays are identified with the note that collection will occur one day later when holidays fall on or before scheduled pickup days.
The newsletter identifies five drop-off locations throughout Pittsburgh with varying hours of operation, ranging from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and specifies that tires, scrap metal, Christmas trees, yard waste, and curbside recyclables are accepted at these facilities. Key regulations prohibit plastic bags for recyclables, limit cans to 35 gallons, restrict each dwelling to two bulk items per week, and prohibit tires, electronics, household hazardous waste, automotive parts, and large construction debris from curbside collection. The City provides multiple contact methods for residents, including a 311 non-emergency line, the MyBurgh app, online webforms, and the website PittsburghPA.gov/311. Related information indicates that the City is soliciting quotes for an Annual Recycling Calendar 2027 with a budget not to exceed $30,000.

When recycling, please place recyclables loosely in the recycling bin at the curb, without bagging them in plastic grocery bags. Overflow recyclables should be placed loosely in another bin clearly marked for recycling.
Thanks for supporting the city’s efforts to go plastic free in stores and at the curb!
