E. Roll lower edge firmly with hand roller to ensure adhesion to the deck.
3.04 Underlayment: Cover the entire roof with high grade synthetic underlayment before the shingles are laid. Lay the underlayment parallel to the eaves, lapping each course at least 2 inches over the underlying course. Secure the underlayment with only enough nails to hold it in place. If two or more pieces are required to continue a course, lap the ends at least 4
07311-16 inches. End laps in a succeeding course should be located at least 6 feet from end laps in the preceding course. Lap the underlayment 1 foot from both sides over all hips and ridges.
3.05 Shingle Application:
A. Lay shingles with a starter course at the eave line. Starter course may be either a row of shingles trimmed to the shingle manufacturer's recommendations or a strip of mineral surfaced roll roofing at least 7 inches wide.
1. If self-sealing shingles are used for the starter strip, remove the tab portion of each shingle and position the remaining strip with the factory-applied adhesive face up along the eaves. Trim at least 3 inches from the end of the first shingle in the starter strip to ensure that the cutouts of the first course of shingles are not placed over the starter strip joints. Fasten starter strips parallel to the eaves along a line 3 to 4 inches above the eaves. Position the fasteners so that they will not be exposed under the cutouts in the first course.
2. If roll roofing is used for the starter strip, nail along a line 3 to 4 inches above the eaves. Space the nails 12 inches apart. If more than one piece of roofing must be used, lap the end joint 2 inches and cement it.
B. Start the first regular shingle course with a full length strip shingle. The second course then starts with a shingle that has six inches removed, the third course with a shingle that has 12 inches removed and so on through the sixth course which starts with a shingle that has 30 inches removed. Adjacent shingles in each course are all full length.
The seventh course again starts with a full length single and the pattern is repeated every sixth course
3.06 Fastening:
A. Use the correct type and size of fasteners as specified by the shingle manufacturer's recommendation.
B. Use the manufacturer’s recommended number of fasteners per shingle for maximum wind resistance.
C. Do not drive fasteners into known holes or cracks in the roof deck.
D. Do not break the shingle surface with the fastener head.
E. Repair faulty fastening immediately.
F. If a fastener does not penetrate the deck properly, remove the fastener and repair the hole in the shingle with bituminous plastic cement or replace the entire shingle. Then place another fastener nearby.
07311-17
3.07 Nailing: Do not nail into or above factory-applied adhesives. Wherever possible, make sure that no cutout or end joint is less than 2 inches from a nail in an underlying course.
Start nailing from the end nearest the shingle just laid and proceed across. This will prevent buckling. To prevent distortion, do not attempt to realign a shingle by shifting the free end after two nails are in place. Drive nails straight so that the edge of the nail head does not cut into the shingle. Nail heads should be driven flush with the shingle surface, not sunk in it.
END OF SECTION 07311
07620-18
