About this file

This is an informational document describing the BioPreferred Construction/Maintenance & Repair program (October 2010), a Federal initiative managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture designed to increase development, purchase, and use of biobased products made from agricultural, forestry, or marine materials.

The BioPreferred program has identified over 5,000 products across 50 product categories designated for Federal preferred purchase, all meeting or exceeding minimum biobased content levels established by USDA. For the construction, maintenance, and repair sector, designated product categories include: Carpets (woven, tufted, or knitted fiber floor coverings); Composite Panels (acoustic, interior, plastic lumber, structural interior, and structural wall applications); Concrete and Asphalt Release Fluids; Expanded Polystyrene Foam (EPS) Recycling Products; Fluid-Filled Transformers (synthetic ester-based and vegetable oil-based); Forming Lubricants; Heat Transfer Fluids; Hydraulic Fluids (mobile and stationary equipment); Metalworking Fluids (general purpose and high performance oils and straight oils); Mulch and Compost Materials; Multipurpose Lubricants; Parts Wash Solutions; Roof Coatings; Spray Insulating Foams; Water Tank Coatings; and Wood and Concrete Sealers (membrane and penetrating applications). The program offers major benefits including climate change impact reduction, energy and environmental security, and economic development. Federal contractors and agencies can access the complete online product catalog at www.biopreferred.gov, and manufacturers may submit products for inclusion by contacting biopreferred@usda.gov. The BioPreferred Program office is located at 361 Reporters Building, 300 7th Street SW, Washington, DC 20024.
