About this file

This is a seed mix specification attachment for an Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service for seedbed preparation, seeding, and post-seeding clipping services in South Dakota. The document details nine comprehensive native prairie seed mixes designed for different ecological sites and regions across South Dakota, with specifications for grasses, sedges, rushes, forbs, and shrubs appropriate to specific Major Land Resource Areas (MLRAs).

The seed mixes include: TGP Monarch (Tall Grass Prairie) for MLRAs 102A-102C and 56; MGP Monarch (Mixed Grass Prairie) for MLRAs 53B-55C and 54, 63A-63B; Border Mix combining both TGP and MGP; Tall Grass Prairie and Mixed Grass Prairie standard mixes; Mixed Grass Prairie for saline/alkali sites (Cy, Cp, TCp); Tall Grass Prairie Wetter variant; River Bottom Floodprone mix; Saline Lowland mix; and Wet Meadow/Low Prairie mix. Each mix specifies Pure Live Seed (PLS) per acre and per square foot, percentage composition by weight, cost per pound of PLS, seed counts per pound, habitat characteristics (cool/warm season, bunchgrass/sod grass, plant heights), monarch butterfly use ratings, herbicide tolerance capabilities (aminopyralid and imazapic), nesting cover provision, and pollinator bloom periods. Mixes are evaluated against quality metrics including Floristic Quality Index (recommended minimum 20.0), Mix Conservatism Coefficient (recommended minimum 3.0), Simpson's Evenness for species balance (recommended minimum 70%), and minimum seed density of 25-30 PLS seeds per square foot depending on mix type. The document includes estimated forage production ranges by ecological site and detailed reference material for NRCS implementation in South Dakota.
