About this file
This is a structural engineering calculation document prepared by FTF Engineering, Inc. for the Union Square Cafe located at 225 Stockton Street in San Francisco, California, and is dated February 17, 2026. The project involves a remodel that includes the addition of approximately 200-pound exhaust vent equipment on the roof of an existing single-story structure with a bare metal deck roof. The proposed work includes design and installation of new steel channel beams to support the new unit and roof deck, as well as anchorage for wind and seismic loading. The calculations are based on the 2025 California Building Code and ASCE 7-22 standards. Seismic anchorage design was exempted under CBC Section 1617A.1.18 due to the unit's weight being below 400 pounds and center of gravity requirements, though seismic considerations were still evaluated. No additional seismic or gravity strengthening of the existing structure was required as the new unit adds approximately 10 pounds per square foot to the affected roof area, below the thresholds specified in CEBC Chapter 5A.
The calculations provide detailed structural analysis including seismic force parameters for San Francisco's Seismic Design Category D, with a spectral acceleration of 1.14 for short periods and a 92-mile-per-hour wind speed design parameter. The support beam design accommodates horizontal seismic forces of 184 pounds and vertical forces of 68 pounds, with comprehensive load combinations analyzed under AISC 360-16 standards. Mechanical attachment to the metal deck requires #10 self-drilling metal screws spaced at 6-inch centers, with 22 screws minimum per side, while attachment of the support channel to the deck utilizes Hilti self-piercing screws with 3 screws per side. All calculations demonstrate adequate capacity with demand-to-capacity ratios below 1.0, confirming structural adequacy for the proposed installation.

SUMMARY SHEET
EXISTING CONDITIONS
1. Existing single-story structure with bare metal deck roof spanning between HSS beams.
PROPOSED WORK
1. The remodel project involves the addition of an approximately 200lbs exhaust vent on top of the roof. We are providing additional support for the new opening, as well as design and anchorage for the new unit.
2. Per CBC exemption 1617A.1.18 Section 13.1.4, because the unit is less that 400lbs and the center of gravity is less than 4 ft above the supporting level, seismic anchorage design is not required but is still being considered.
3. The new unit adds only around 10psf to the area where the roof deck will be removed. By observation, the seismic mass is not increasing by 10% and the gravity load to the existing HSS beams is not increasing by 5%.
Per CEBC Chapter 5A Sections 503A.2 and 503A.4, additional seismic or gravity strengthening is not required.
STRUCTURAL DESIGN SUMMARY
1. Governing code is 2025 CBC with seismic loads consisting of 100% of the prescribed loads for new buildings according to ASCE 7-22.
2. New steel channel beams added to support the new unit and roof deck.
3. Anchorage for wind and seismic loading of the new unit to the roof deck and steel channel beams.
