About this file

This is a memorandum issued by the New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) in Connecticut outlining school bell times and workday alignment for the 2026-2027 academic year. The document, distributed by Keisha Redd-Hannans, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, establishes official start and end times for all elementary, middle, and high schools within the district, as well as the early childhood program at Dr. Mayo School. The memorandum confirms that classroom teachers and staff on the teacher salary schedule will maintain a scheduled workday of six hours and forty-five minutes (6.75 hours), inclusive of arrival and dismissal duties, instructional time, collaborative time, and professional preparation time, in accordance with Article II, Section 3(a) of the New Haven Federation of Teachers (NHFT) Contract. Elementary and middle school bell times range from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM start times, with corresponding dismissal times between 2:15 PM and 3:45 PM, while high school start times range from 7:15 AM to 8:00 AM with dismissal times between 2:00 PM and 2:45 PM.

Any previous school-level start and end time plan arrangements expire at the conclusion of the current academic year, and principals proposing new time plans must obtain formal approval from school staff, the NHFT President, and the Assistant Superintendent. The memorandum also clarifies that principals retain the ability to arrange flexible schedules with individual teachers for programmatic or supervisory needs prior to official school start and end times, provided such arrangements remain consistent with the collective bargaining agreement provisions. This notification ensures alignment between operational scheduling and contractual obligations across all NHPS facilities for the upcoming academic year.

To: All Staff From: Keisha Redd-Hannans, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Date: April 9, 2026 Re: School Bell Times and Workday Alignment

As we prepare for the 2026-2027 academic year, this memo provides official notification regarding school bell times and their alignment with the collective bargaining agreement between the New Haven Board of Education and the New Haven Federation of Teachers (NHFT).

Teacher Workday and Duties: In accordance with Article II, Section 3(a) of the NHFT Contract, classroom teachers and others on the teacher’s salary schedule shall work a scheduled day of six hours and forty-five minutes (6.75 hours). This workday is inclusive of arrival and dismissal duties, as well as instructional time, collaborative time, and other professional or preparation time.

School-Level Time Plan Arrangements: Please be advised that any previous start and end time plan arrangements decided at the school level with the entire staff will expire at the end of the current academic year. Moving forward, if a principal would like to propose a new start and end time plan, it will require the formal approval of the teachers at the school, the NHFT President, and the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.

Flexible Scheduling: As outlined in the NHFT contract, principals can arrange flexible schedules with individual teachers for programmatic or supervisory needs prior to the official start and end times of school. These arrangements must remain consistent with the provisions of Article II, Section 3(a).
