About this file
This document is the General Requirements for Contractors on Alcatraz Island, which provides detailed information and guidelines for contractors performing work on the island. Key details include:
Parking and transportation logistics - Contractors are not permitted to park at the Alcatraz Landing; they must transport equipment and supplies via the staff ferry or chartered services. All cargo must be hand-carried or transported in wheelbarrows, and hazardous materials are prohibited on the ferries. The Parks Conservancy barge can be used for small equipment deliveries, but its schedule is limited. Charters and water taxis are available for off-hour transportation.
Material and equipment handling - All materials and supplies must be able to fit through the island's sally port. Contractors are responsible for providing forklifts or other vehicles for on-island transport. Fueling of vehicles is regulated, and all unused materials must be removed from the island. Unauthorized deliveries will be subject to additional charges.
Pricing and services - The document includes a sample Materials Transportation Agreement that outlines pricing for various ferry, water taxi, and related services provided by Alcatraz Island Cruises, including hourly rates, crane pick fees, and charges for portable restrooms and pressure washers.

GENERAL INFORMATION AND REQUIREMENTS FOR CONTRACTORS
ON ALCATRAZ ISLAND, NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK
PARKING
• Contractor parking at Alcatraz Landing is not permitted. Parking areas near the Pier can be found on the Alcatraz Cruises website.
• Contractors should arrive early at Alcatraz Landing, drive in and unload supplies and equipment, move the vehicle to a nearby parking lot, and walk back to the Pier to load the boat.
CREW TRANSPORT
• Contractors must provide a list of crew members’ names to the Project Manager at least two days before the first day of work.
• Crew members must check in at the Ticket Booth.
• Photo identification is required for passage on any ferry/barge/water taxi.
EQUIPMENT/SUPPLY TRANSPORT BY STAFF AND PUBLIC FERRIES
• No flammables or hazardous materials are allowed on the staff or public ferries under any circumstances.
• The staff ferry leaves Pier 33 daily at 8:20AM. Arrive at 8AM to load. Only hand carried or wheelbarrow-sized loads are allowed on the staff ferry. One trip down the gangway only.
• All cargo will be placed on a designated tarp, non-carpeted area, or in improved bins/containers designated as appropriate for loose materials. Contractors will take care to prevent spilling or marking floor coverings.
• Public ferries operate on a season schedule. Check the Alcatraz Cruises website for the latest timetable.

PARKS CONSERVANCY BARGE
• The monthly Parks Conservancy barge may be used depending on space and time availability.
Barge use is at the discretion of Patrick McAllister (pmcallister@parksconservancy.org).
• The barge can transport small loads (10 crane picks or less) of supplies and equipment to the island.
• Contractors will provide a schedule of delivery, installations dates, and manifest of delivery items to the Project Manager and Patrick McAllister at least one week in advance of barge departure date.
• Crew may not travel to Alcatraz by barge.
• Barge space is limited. The barge departure schedule is firm and cannot be changed.
• Contractors will be charged for their individual lifts and are responsible for coordinating directly with Westar Marine Services (415-495-3191) for billing and payment.
ADDITIONAL TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS
• Ferries can be chartered for off-hour runs. All charters must be arranged directly with Alcatraz Island Cruises by emailing Trevor Hendronetto (trevor.hendron@cityexperiences.com) at least one week in advance. No exceptions.
• Westar Marine is authorized to provide dock and crane service for Alcatraz. Water taxi and barge delivery services are available. Other marine services vendors may also be used.
• Contact Patrick McAllister (pmcallister@parksconservancy.org) to confirm water taxi vendor qualifications and all delivery schedules, regardless of vendor. Unscheduled boats may be turned away.
• Use of the floating dock is not authorized without approval of the NPS. All water taxi use must be coordinated with your Project Manager and the island’s NPS Maintenance Contracting Officer
Representative (COR).
GENERAL INFORMATION
• Refer to addendum Materials Transportation Agreement sample for pricing of materials and logistics services, including water, gasoline, diesel fuel, forklift operations, off-hour ferry service, on-island transportation, and portable restrooms.
• All loads, regardless of how they are delivered to the island, must be able to fit through the island’s sally port (see Figure 1).
• The use of Alcatraz roadways is regulated. Contractors should plan to use their own forklift or vehicles for transportation.
• Fueling for vehicles brought to Alcatraz is regulated. NPS has gasoline and diesel fuel suppliers that the Contractor may contact for project related supplies.
• All unused materials and supplies must be taken off the island. No exceptions.
• All deliveries to the island must be moved directly to the designated staging area. The Alcatraz dock does not have storage facilities.
• Any unauthorized deliveries to Alcatraz will be immediately removed. All resulting costs will be charged to the contractor.
