PRELIMINARY PIT EVALUATION
SADDLE CAMP PIT
NEZ PERCE-CLEARWATER NATIONAL FOREST
ALLWEST Testing and Engineering, Inc. (ALLWEST) has completed the preliminary evaluation for the above referenced pit. The approximate location of the source site is shown on the attached Vicinity Map, Figure A-1. We understand the pit is being considered as an aggregate source for United States Forest Service (USFS) projects. This report details the results of the field evaluation and laboratory testing and presents our conclusions and recommendations.
1.0 SCOPE OF SERVICES
Our scope of services included the following:
1) Reviewed soil and geologic mapping and readily available aerial photography of the site.
2) Observed the excavation of six test pits at the site. The test pits were excavated with a rubber-tire backhoe subcontracted from Cook and Sons Construction. The latitude, longitude and elevation of each test pit was recorded with a handheld global positioning system (GPS) unit.
Photographs of the test pit excavations and pit were taken.
3) The soil and rock observed in the test pits was described and classified in general accordance with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). The subsurface profiles observed in the test pits were described and recorded.
4) Performed laboratory tests on select soil and rock samples to assess some of the soil and rock properties.
5) Prepared and submitted this report providing a summary of our findings, recommendations and conclusions.
Our services were provided in general accordance with our proposal dated July 12, 2018.
2.0 SITE LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION
The project is located at latitude 46.493341° and longitude -115.091368° in the southeast ¼ of the northwest ¼ of Section 4, Township 36 North, Range 11 East of the Boise Meridian. The site consists of a previously mined pit. A steep exposed bedrock slope is present along the west side of the pit. The pit floor is located east of the slope. Two fairly large piles of waste material, consisting of on-site soil and cobbles
Preliminary Pit Evaluation ALLWEST Project No. 318-176G Saddle Camp Pit Page 2 www.allwesttesting.com and boulders are present on the pit floor. A bench area is located on the southern portion of the site between the pit floor and exposed slope face. Vegetation consists of weeds, grasses and small trees. The site is bound by a steep downward slope to the east and south. Photographs of the site are included in Appendix A.
2.1 General Geologic Conditions
The geology for the project area is mapped on the “Geologic Map of the Kooskia 30 x 60 Quadrangle, Idaho, Lewis, R.S., et al, 2007. The mapping depicts the project area as Eocene aged equigranular biotite Granite (Tg). The majority of the rock formation observed in the project consisted of an equigranular granitoid that was white to gray in color with a small percentage of biotite. The observed rock formation appears to be generally consistent with the geologic mapping. We also observed to a lesser degree a light gray granitoid rock that appears to correspond to the mapped unit of dacite (Tpd). The dacite is described as porphyritic dacite in a gray aphanitic groundmass that occures in dikes and plugs. These dikes and/or plugs are seen as lines on the geologic map north and south west of the project site.
The mapped geology is shown on Figure A-3 in Appendix A.
2.2 General Soil Conditions
The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has mapped the overburden soil on the site as Entic cryandepts (mountain slopes) on the northern portion of the site and Andic cryochrepts (dissected stream breaklands) on the southern portion of the site. Both units are reported to consist of volcanic ash over alluvium derived from granite. The NRCS rates both soil formations as “poor” for gravel and roadfill sources.
3.0 SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
Six test pits were excavated at the site with a subcontracted rubber-tire backhoe provided by Cook and Sons Construction. The test pits were excavated at the approximate locations shown on the Test Pit Location Map, Figure A-2, in Appendix A of this report. The latitude, longitude and elevation of each of the test pits was measured with a Topcon GRS-1 handheld GPS unit. A summary of the test pit locations and elevations is provided in the following table.
Test Pit No. Latitude Longitude Elevation (feet)
TP-1 46.493615 -115.091327 5,111.5
TP-2 46.493464 -115.091097 5,101.3
TP-3 46.493339 -115.091388 5,104.9
TP-4 46.493159 -115.091490 5,115.2
TP-5 46.493133 -115.091255 5,095.0
TP-6 46.492980 -115.091525 5,091.7
The test pit locations and elevations are based on NAD83 (2011) datum.
Saddle Camp Pit Page 3 www.allwesttesting.com
The soil/rock conditions observed in the test pits were visually described and classified in general accordance with ASTM D 2487 and D 2488 and the subsurface profiles were logged. Bulk samples of the soil and bedrock encountered were obtained for laboratory testing. The test pits were loosely backfilled with excavation spoils. Photographs of the test pits are provided in Appendix A.
3.1 Subsurface Soil and Rock Conditions
The subsurface soil profile observed in the test pits generally consisted of silty sand with gravel overlying granite bedrock. Approximately 4 feet of undocumented fill was observed in test pit TP-5. Practical excavator refusal was encountered in each of the test pits on granite bedrock at depths ranging from approximately 1½ to 5½ feet below the existing ground surface. Descriptions of the soil types observed follow.
Undocumented fill – The undocumented fill consists of silty sand with gravel. It contains cobbles and boulders. It is loose, moist, predominantly fine-grained, and brown in color.
Silty sand with gravel – The silty sand with gravel contains varied amounts of cobbles and roots. It is loose to medium dense, slightly moist to moist, predominantly fine-grained, and brown in color.
Cobbles and boulders (talus) – The cobbles and boulders are infilled with silty sand. It is medium dense, slightly moist, angular, fine-grained sand, and brown (sand) to gray (cobbles and boulders) in color.
Granite – The granite bedrock is very hard, dry to slightly moist, slightly to moderately fractured and light gray to gray to dark gray in color.
3.2 Groundwater Conditions
Groundwater was not observed in the test pits at the time of excavation to the maximum depth explored, approximately 5½ feet below the existing ground surface. Changes in precipitation, construction or other factors may impact the depth to groundwater on the property. Fluctuations in the groundwater level should be expected. An evaluation of these changes is beyond the scope of this report.
Detailed descriptions of the subsurface conditions observed in the test pits are presented on the test pit logs in Appendix B of this report. The descriptive soil terms used on the boring logs and in this report can be referenced by the USCS. A copy of the USCS is included in Appendix B. The subsurface conditions may vary between test pit locations. Such changes in conditions would not be apparent until further excavation is performed.
Saddle Camp Pit Page 4 www.allwesttesting.com
4.0 LABORATORY TESTING
Laboratory testing was performed to supplement field classifications and to assess some of the soil and rock engineering characteristics. The laboratory testing was performed by ALLWEST. The laboratory tests included the following.
Test Test Method Gradation AASHTO T27 and T11 Hydrometer AASHTO T88 Atterberg Limits AASHTO T89 and T90 Fractured Faces ASTM D5821 Flat and Elongated Particles ASTM D4791 Clay Lumps and Friable Particles AASHTO T112 Sand Equivalent AASHTO T176 L.A. Abrasion AASHTO T96 Sodium Sulfate Soundness AASHTO T104 Durability Index AASHTO T210 Specific Gravity and Absorption AASHTO T84 & T85
5.0 SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The following summary is provided based on the observed site and subsurface conditions and laboratory test results.
• The on-site overburden soils tested do not meet the FP-14 Standard Specification for base, subbase and surface course aggregates due to the presence of clay lumps and friable particles. The test results for clay lumps and friable particles range from 0.1 to 0.9 percent. The FP-14 Standard Specification for base, subbase and surface course aggregates is 0.0 percent.
The overburden soils generally do not meet the gradation requirements for base, subbase and surface course aggregates.
In addition, the sodium sulfate soundness loss for fine aggregate from the test pit TP-6 sample from 3 to 5 feet exceeds the FP-14 specification of a maximum loss of 12 percent. The test result from this sample was 16.7 percent loss.
The materials tested meet the other FP-14 Standard Specifications for base, subbase and surface course aggregates.
• The soils tested meet FP-14 Standard Specifications for unclassified borrow, except for the sample from test pit TP-2 at 0 to 1 foot. This sample classifies as AASHTO A-4 soil. The specification for unclassified borrow requires AASHTO soil classifications of A-1, A-3 or A-2-4.
Saddle Camp Pit Page 5 www.allwesttesting.com
• The soils tested meet the FP-14 Standard Specification for liquid limit for select borrow but do not meet the gradation specification.
• The soils tested meet the FP-14 Standard Specification for plasticity index and
LA Abrasion for select granular backfill but generally do not meet the gradation specification. Additionally, the soils tested meet the specifications for sodium sulfate soundness, except for test pit TP-6 from 3 to 5 feet. FP-14 includes a specification for angle of internal friction, which was not included in our scope of services.
• Although the soil samples tested do not meet all specifications for base aggregates, subbase aggregates, surface course aggregates, unclassified borrow, select borrow, and select granular borrow, it appears the on-site granite bedrock will meet these requirements when crushed and processed based on the rock test results.
• The rock samples tested meet the FP-14 Standard Specifications for gabion rock, riprap and rockery rock.
• Based on the test results, it is our professional opinion the Saddle Camp Pit is a viable rock source for United States Forest Service project aggregates, borrow material and rock products. As discussed, the soils at the site may not meet all specifications for aggregates and/or borrow. It should be noted the on-site soils are a minor component of material available at the site.
