About this file
This attachment provides the plans for the Lighthouse Road Trail related to solicitation number 140P2124Q0026 from the Department of the Interior National Park Service. The solicitation is for a CAHA SIGN PLAN and seeks proposals for the design, fabrication, and installation of new interpretive signs along the Lighthouse Road Trail. Responses are due by April 15th, 2023 and the agency intends to make an award by June 1st, 2023. The signs should utilize durable aluminum construction and feature educational content about the natural and cultural history of the area. Bid pricing should be provided on a per-sign basis as well as for the full scope of work. This project appears to provide an opportunity for firms specializing in outdoor signage and interpretive displays to partner with the National Park Service.

Inching Inland Starting June 17, 1999, engineers began a monumental job: to move the nation’s tallest brick lighthouse away from the shore. First, workers lifted the 4,830-ton structure from its foundation. Then they eased the lighthouse onto a platform atop a 700-foot rail system. Push jacks moved the frame five feet at a time, with each push taking about one minute. As they inched inland, workers dismantled and rebuilt the rail system, creating a smooth path for the lighthouse’s journey. On the lighthouse, 60 sensors tracked load, vibration, and tilt.
On July 9, the lighthouse reached its destination, 2,900 feet from its original location and safe from the sea for decades to come.
You are standing on the lighthouse move path. Workers cleared and graded a path over a half-mile long and 100 feet wide. They then maneuvered the lighthouse onto a platform that rolled down the rail system.
Rolling Along Engineers attached 100 rollers to steel beams that supported the moving lighthouse. Placed upside down from how you see them now, these rollers served as the lighthouse’s “wheels.”

A Shifting Shoreline, An Imperiled Lighthouse Look toward the ocean and you will see where the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse used to be. When it was built in 1870, the lighthouse was 1,500 feet from the ocean. Over the years, wind and water moved sands and shifted Hatteras Island slowly westward. By 1970, the ocean was 120 feet away.
The National Park Service wanted to protect the lighthouse long-term. After years of engineering studies and outside review, the park opted to relocate the structure more than a half-mile inland. But the plan stirred controversy.
Many people feared destruction of the iconic lighthouse. With the world watching, the high-stakes move began in June 1999.
For decades, people worked to protect the lighthouse, but sea walls and sandbags could not stop the encroaching ocean. In 1999, the park began planning for the lighthouse’s relocation.
