About this file

This is a binding styles specification document for the Library of Congress Serial Binding Services contract (030ADV26R0022). The document outlines ten distinct binding categories that contractors must be capable of executing, each with specific technical requirements and methodologies.

The binding styles include: Standard Serials and Custom Serials (requiring collation per NISO Z39.78 standards with specified or contractor-determined leaf attachment methods); Standard Books and Custom Books (with Standard Books utilizing double fan adhesive binding, rounding, and backing with Library Summit or approved alternative covering, while Custom Books involve labor-intensive procedures such as mending, hand sewing, or flush bottom binding); Standard Recase and Custom Recase (for recasing books or serials with contractor color selection when not specified, with Custom Recase requiring enhanced care for hardcover items); Unlettered binding (economy binding with call numbers only); Pamphlets (single folded sections sewn-through-the-fold); and Print and Bind services (handling digital files for printing and/or binding with scanning capabilities and electronic or hard copy delivery options). Contractors must reference the Decision Tree in Section C.3.6. to determine leaf attachment methods when binding tickets do not specify requirements. All work must comply with NISO Z39.78 standards or approved alternatives and follow the highest professional preservation standards as outlined in the primary Library of Congress shelving and binding solicitation.
