About this file
This bid specification details the requirements for replacing and upgrading elevators in Buildings 15, 47, and 62 at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC. The work involves traditional asbestos abatement, including removal of approximately 35 asbestos-containing elevator landing door systems, installation of temporary fall protection systems, and abatement of contaminated crawlspace areas in Buildings 47 and 15.
Key requirements include removal and disposal of asbestos materials, establishing negative pressure enclosures with decontamination facilities, air monitoring, and clearance testing. The contractor must provide all labor, materials, equipment and supervision to complete the asbestos abatement work in accordance with federal, state and local regulations. Specific tasks include removing elevator landing doors presumed to contain asbestos cores, dismantling frames and slide systems, installing temporary fall protection, and encapsulating contaminated crawlspace soil with EPDM membrane systems. The work must be performed in phases during nights and weekends to minimize disruption to hospital operations. The contractor must maintain strict containment and decontamination procedures throughout the project and achieve final clearance through visual inspection and air sampling.
