About this file

This document package includes plans and specifications for the construction of three grassed waterways at the ARS-Blackland farm in Bell County, Texas. The plans show dimensions, materials requirements, and design details for each of the three trapezoidal channel waterways to be built to convey runoff from surrounding fields. The longest waterway is 600 feet, while the other two are 350 and 300 feet in length. Construction will involve excavation, grading, seeding, and installing erosion controls according to the specifications. The operation and maintenance documents provide guidance on post-construction care activities such as mowing, weed control, and repair of damage. This appears to be design documents for a local project not a federal procurement.

1. SCOPE

Work shall consist of shaping the waterway channel and placing excavated material as specified.

2. LOCATION

The planned location of the waterway shall be as shown on furnished drawings or as staked in the field.

3. PUBLIC AND PRIVATE UTILITIES

Utilities are defined to be overhead and underground power or communication lines, and pipelines. All utilities discovered to be in the work area are shown on the drawings or sketches.

However, the absence of indicators on the drawings or sketches does not assure the nonexistence of utilities in the work area. The contractor is alerted to conduct his/her own search and discovery for utilities in order to lessen or avoid potential damages. The owner/operator shall complete TX-ENG-80, UTILITIES INVENTORY prior to layout or any ground disturbance and return it to an NRCS representative.

4. SITE PREPARATION

All trees stumps, brush, and other objectionable material that will interfere with construction or proper functioning of the waterway shall be removed from the site and disposed of in a manner consistent with environmental concerns and proper functioning of the waterway.

5. DIMENSIONS OF INSTALLATION

Waterways shall be constructed to the grade and dimensions shown on the plans, specified on furnished drawings, or as staked in the field.

6. MATERIAL

Excavated material will be used to construct side banks, roads, or other fills as specified. Topsoil shall be stockpiled and re-spread where necessary to provide a seedbed for the grass. Seedbed preparation; time of seeding; seeding mixture and rate; stabilizing crop; mulching; or mechanical means of stabilization; and fertilizer and lime requirements shall be provided to the owner/operator for the waterway and other disturbed areas after construction is complete.

Any spoil shall be spread where it will not interfere with flow into the waterway. If necessary, excess water shall be diverted away until vegetation is established. Any protective measures shall then be removed, and the disturbed areas that are not to be farmed shall be seeded to permanent grass.

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE PLAN

GRASSED WATERWAY

Date: 12-6-2021 Producer/Land user: ARS-BLACKLAND

Address: Address 1

Address 2

Description of practice location: Tract No. Farm No. Field No. 2. SOUTH OF STATION

A properly operated and maintained Grassed Waterway is an asset to your farm. This Grassed Waterway was designed and installed to stabilize an eroding area and to safely convey runoff from the drainage area. The estimated life span of this installation is at least 10 years. The life of this practice can be assured and usually increased by developing and carrying out a good operation and maintenance program.

This practice will require you to perform periodic maintenance and may also require operational items to maintain satisfactory performance. Here are some recommendations to help you develop a good operation and maintenance program.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

• Establish a maintenance program to maintain waterway capacity, vegetative cover, and outlet stability. Vegetation damaged by machinery, herbicides, or erosion must be repaired promptly.

• Protect the waterway from concentrated flow by using diversion of runoff or mechanical means of stabilization such as silt fences, mulching, hay bale barriers and etc. to stabilize grade during vegetation establishment.

• Minimize damage to vegetation by excluding livestock whenever possible, especially during wet periods. Permit grazing in the waterway only when a controlled grazing system is being implemented.

• Inspect grassed waterways regularly, especially following heavy rains. Fill, compact, and reseed damaged areas immediately. Remove sediment deposits to maintain capacity of grassed waterway.

412-2

Contact your local Natural Resources Conservation Service office for any additional technical assistance you might need for implementation of this Operation and Maintenance Plan for your conservation practice.

NRCS, TEXAS

November 2015

• Avoid use of herbicides that would be harmful to the vegetation or pollinating insects in and adjacent to the waterway area.

• Avoid using waterways as turn-rows during tillage and cultivation operations.

• Mow or periodically graze vegetation to maintain capacity and reduce sediment deposition. Mowing may be appropriate to enhance wildlife values, but must be conducted to avoid peak nesting seasons and reduced winter cover.

• Apply supplemental nutrients as needed to maintain the desired species composition and stand density of the waterway.

• Control noxious weeds.

• Do not use waterways as a field road. Avoid crossing with heavy equipment when wet.

• Lift tillage equipment off the waterway when crossing and turn off chemical application equipment.

• Remove all foreign debris that hinders system operation.

• Eradicate or otherwise remove all rodents or burrowing animals. Immediately repair any damage caused by their activity.
