About this file
This is a specification attachment for a road reconstruction project under a USDA Forest Service contract. The document provides technical specifications for materials and construction standards applicable to the Cerro Pelado Roads Reconstruction project, specifically addressing two key components: cattle guard standards and forest service aggregate requirements.
The attachment modifies cattle guard specifications by replacing the "HS-20" designation with "U-80" classification under Section 619.08(c). For surface course aggregate under Section 703.05, the specification establishes comprehensive requirements for hard, durable particles including crushed stone, crushed slag, or crushed gravel. These materials must meet defined gradation standards per Table 703-1 (ranging from 100% passing at 1 inch to 8-18% passing at No. 200 sieve), Los Angeles abrasion testing limits of 35% maximum per AASHTO T 96, soundness requirements using sodium sulfate with 12% loss maximum for both coarse and fine aggregate, durability index minimums of 35 for both coarse and fine materials, and fractured faces requirements of 75% minimum with one or more faces per AASHTO T 335. Additional requirements include organic matter prohibition, clay content limits, and liquid limit specifications of 35 maximum. The specification permits imported bentonite addition (2% when plasticity index is below 4) to achieve required plasticity index levels of 4-10, with statistical procedures excluded from application.
