About this file

This is an Environmental Testing Protocol document that outlines the Disinfection Biproducts (DBP) Testing Plan for the George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center. The protocol establishes procedures for water quality sampling and testing to ensure compliance with state of Utah requirements and protect patient safety.

The testing protocol assigns responsibility for sampling site determination to the VASLCHCS Water Safety Committee with support from the VA Infection Preventionist and VA Engineering Service. Routine DBP testing will be conducted quarterly at the midpoint of the distribution system from the ground floor of Building 1, with samples tested for total trihalomethanes (TTHM) and Haloacetic acids (HAA5) by a certified testing contractor. VA Engineering Services staff will collect water samples using EPA guidelines and transport them immediately to the testing laboratory. Written laboratory results will be forwarded to the Infection Preventionist and GEMS manager to minimize exposure risk. All tested sites and environmental results will be tracked in the VASLCHCS Water Safety Committee Environmental Sampling Spreadsheet. Upon receipt of any positive environmental sample result, the Water Safety Committee Chair must prepare a VHA Issue Brief detailing the issue, status, actions, progress, resolution date, and relevant contacts, which will be submitted to VISN 19 Leadership via the Issue Brief Approval Group.
