Project NRS‐16 Replacement of Greenhouse Climate Controllers

General Information

1.0 Scope of Work

Greenhouse climate controllers need to be replaced. Original install 1998. New controllers need to interface with existing equipment climate control mechanicals and provide similar heating and cooling effects and originally designed.

2.0 Background

1. Description of Greenhouses

a. These greenhouses were built in 1997 by A.J. Lauer Co out of Farmington, MN. Each greenhouse is 28’ x

36’ and they share a middle wall. There is 8 ft. of clearance from the floor to strut channel that holds electrical conduit and receptacles for grow lights.

b. Each house has its own climate control systems consisting of a ridge vent, a wet media swamp cooler system with two exhaust fans each, two natural gas heaters with a central plenum for air flow, and centrally located aspirator type thermostats that give constant readings to the controls panels which are Wadsworth Step 500 units.

i. The most critical issue is that the respirators (thermostats) and the Step 500 controls are failing.

The one control is being tricked into running in Day Mode only as there is a problem on the controller circuit board and an additional problem in the respirator. These systems are obsolete with no parts available from the manufacturer.

ii. New climate controllers are needed that interface with existing equipment and replace the designed function of the old Step 500 controllers.

Contractor Requirements

3.0 Technical Requirements / Tasks

The contractor will be responsible for removing the old Step 500 controllers and acquiring and installing the new control device(s).

New controllers will interface with:

(2) Unit Heater - Gas Fired (120V, 1-Ph, HP, Amps) Modine High Efficiency

(2) Horizontal Air Flow (HAF) Fan (120V, 1-Ph, HP, Amps)

(1) Vertical Air Flow (VAF) Fan (120V, 1-Ph, HP, Amps) Air Plenum

(1) Roof Vent Leader (LST) (120V, 1-Ph, 1/20HP, .68Amps)

VC100

(1) Pad Vent (120V, 1-Ph, 1/20HP, .68Amps) VC100

(1) Exhaust Fan - Single Speed (120V, 1-Ph, 1/3HP, Amps) Marathon

(1) Exhaust Fan - Two Speed (120V, 1-Ph, 1/3HP, Amps) Dayton

(1) Pad Pump (120V, 1-Ph, 1/3HP, Amps

Existing contactor panels may be used and additional contactors may be needed. The contactor will provide any new contactor and panels required for safe and proper function.

The contactor will provide additional wire and conduit when needed.

The contractor will ensure proper function of the new controllers. This will require collecting interior climate data to make sure control steps are occurring as designed. The contractor will train Forest Service personnel on function, proper use, and routine maintenance of new equipment.

4.0 Government Furnished

The contractor will have access to the FS building (headhouse) and greenhouses where the equipment is to be installed and restroom facilities.

Federal holidays TBD depending on start date.

5.0 Deliverables / Schedule

Work should not begin until the greenhouse manager (David Carey) is consulted so that we can make sure that no essential work is ongoing.

Work should not begin before September 1st 2022 unless explicit permission is given by the greenhouse manager.

All work should be completed and fully operational by Dec. 9th 2022.

Work will be completed 4 weeks from start date. This may be negotiated.

7.0 Contractor’s Key Personnel

Electrician experience with climate control systems and greenhouse climate control systems, in particular, is required.

Training to operate new equipment will be provided by personnel with direct experience in their proper operation.

Attachment The primary consideration in for awarding this contract, other than price, is that it be awarded to a contractor with experience with greenhouse climate control systems.
