About this file
This supporting document file pertains to Springfield Hospital Center (SHC) in Maryland and contains detailed information about the proposed McKeldin Courtyard Pollinator Garden transformation project. The project involves a multiphase design and construction plan to convert approximately 3,000 square feet of existing cement courtyard into a therapeutic pollinator garden with integrated walking paths and seating areas. Phase 1 includes removal of cement, installation of access doors replacing middle windows to provide direct garden access, and incorporation of shade structures extending from the roof. Phase 2 will develop additional pollinator gardens with interconnected walking paths, rain barrels, and potentially a greenhouse. The courtyard, located in the center of the McKeldin Building, contains no utilities or roads and is positioned near three campus stormwater retention ponds. The project addresses a significant need, as McKeldin is the oldest and largest of SHC's three patient buildings but currently lacks fully accessible outdoor space for all patient levels, unlike the existing therapy gardens in the Salomon and Hitchman buildings.
The project is funded through a Chesapeake Bay Trust Outreach and Restoration Grant, which covers design fees for the multiphase plan. SHC will fund construction and supplies for Phase 1 work, including roof-extending shade structures and door installations. The scope includes site assessment, master plan development, demolition, construction, and landscape installation performed by a qualified engineering and conservation landscaping firm. The project incorporates a native plant list and reflects SHC's commitment to environmental stewardship, consistent with prior grant-funded initiatives including a 70-acre reforestation project funded by BGE and public art murals funded by the Maryland State Arts Council.

Photo 2: Access doors will be installed in place of the middle window shown in this image. These doors will provide direct access to the gardens and outdoor space. Additionally, shade structures extending from the roof will be incorporated. The construction and supplies for this work will be funded by Springfield Hospital Center.
Photo 3: The design fees covered by the grant include a multiphase design and construction plan. Phase 2 will develop the area shown below into additional pollinator gardens with interconnected walking paths. Design considerations for this phase include the installation of rain barrels and a potential greenhouse.
