About this file

This document is an attachment that provides a detailed description of the sample port locations for the nickel electroforming/plating and chromium plating line exhaust ducts at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's (BEP) District of Columbia Facility.

The attachment specifies the dimensions, angles, and relative locations of the sample ports on the 28-inch nickel duct and 20-inch chromium duct, which are located on the 5th floor of the main building. It includes schematics showing the precise placement and orientation of the sample ports, as well as the proximity to nearby duct bends and other flow disturbances. This information is provided to support the related federal contract opportunity for air emissions compliance testing on these plating lines, as described in the attached solicitation.

ATTACHMENT 8: DESCRIPTION OF EXHAUST DUCT SAMPLE PORTS

Gas samples for the measurement of pollutant emissions can be extracted from a location in a utility room on the 5th floor of the main building. Each of the final scrubbers (nickel scrubber and chromium scrubber) have an exhaust duct which directs the cleaned vapors to the atmosphere. The ducts run parallel from the outlets of the scrubbers to a mixing box which is located close to the roof of the main building, above the 5th floor. Exhaust gases from the scrubbers are combined and mixed with ambient air from outside the building before being vented to the atmosphere. There sample ports are installed so that stack gas samples can be extracted from the scrubber exhausts before they are combined and diluted. The sample port locations are in an equipment storage room located on the 5th floor of the main building, directly above the scrubbers that are located on the 2nd floor. The ports on each duct are located approximately 8 to 9 feet above the floor level. Additional descriptions of the sampling locations for the nickel and chromium plating lines are presented in the following paragraphs.

NICKEL ELECTOFORMING/PLATING LINE

A schematic of the sample point locations on the nickel electroforming/plating exhaust is presented in the Figure 1, below. The exhaust duct is a 28‐inch diameter round duct which runs at a 30° angle from the floor of the equipment storage room to the crown of the building. The straight‐run duct length is 20 feet and 2 inches, or 8.64 duct diameters. BEP installed two 3‐inch diameter sample ports in the nickel exhaust duct in 2010 to allow gas samples to be extracted for analysis. The sample ports are located 80 inches (approximately 2.9 duct diameters) upstream of a 30° bend at the crown of the building. The sample ports are each offset 90° to each other. The nearest flow disturbance upstream of the sample ports is located 162 inches (5.79 diameters) upstream of the sample ports.

CHROMIUM PLATING LINE

A schematic of the sample point locations on the chromium plating exhaust is presented in the Figure 2, below. These sample ports are also located on the 5th floor of the main building. The exhaust duct is a

20‐inch diameter round duct which runs at a 30° angle from the floor of the equipment storage room to the crown of the building. The straight‐run duct length is 200 inches (10.0 duct diameters). BEP installed two 3‐inch diameter sample ports in the chromium exhaust duct in 2010 to allow gas samples for to be extracted for analysis. The sample ports are located 53 inches (approximately 2.65 duct diameters) upstream of a 30° bend at the crown of the building. One sample port is installed horizontally on the side of the duct, and the other sample port is installed in the bottom of the duct. Thus, the sample ports are offset 90° to each other. The nearest flow disturbance upstream of the sample ports was 147 inches

(7.35 diameters) upstream of the sample ports.
