About this file

This is a design narrative document for a sewer lift pump replacement project at the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System East (Tuskegee) VA Medical Center, Contract Number 36C24723C0085. The document details the technical specifications for replacing an aging sewage lift pump in Building 12 that serves multiple buildings (12, 13, 14, 15, and 65) on the campus.

The project scope includes installing new duplex sewer pumps with a fiberglass basin, replacing the original pump from 1923. Key specifications include: flow rate of 207 gallons per minute, total head of 31 feet, static head of 18 feet, with Zoeller Pump Package 62 HD Series (model 6221) as the basis of design. The new system will feature emergency power backup, automatic controls with level alarms, and will use hubless cast iron pipe for gravity drain waste and either galvanized steel or copper pipe for pump discharge. The electrical system will utilize 480-volt, 3-phase, 7.5-HP pumps powered through new panel PP12-1, with ancillary circuits served by panel LP12-1. The installation requires minimizing downtime by keeping the existing pump operational until the new system is ready.

1.0 GENERAL PROJECT INFORMATION

1.1 SCOPE

Atriax is providing Professional (PE) Architectural / Engineering services to verify existing conditions and utilities design and prepare contract working drawings and specifications for Project No. 619A4- 23-111 “Replace Sewer Lift Pump in Building 12”. This project will remove and replace the current sewage lift pump in Building 12. This pump currently serves as the sewage pump for buildings 12, 13, 14, 15 (Fire Department), and 65 (Laundry). Because of the age of the pump, if it were to fail, replacement parts would not be available to repair the pump.

A new pump, which can be serviced, is required to ensure sewage service to buildings 12, 13, 14, and 15 continues with no interruptions. This project will correct this issue and the current plumbing requirements associated with this pump will be evaluated to ensure there are no deficiencies. This project shows up in the Site Section at the end of the 2021 Facility Condition Assessment. In accordance with recommendations from the this recently completed Facility Condition Assessment, the sewage lift station is past its useful life and requires replacement.

The location of this project is in Building 12.

1. FCA 58528 – Sanitary sewer outflow piping installed in 1928 is old and past useful life, but still functional. Suggest inspecting outflow piping with cameras to verify that piping is in serviceable condition and there are no leaks present.

* Sewage lift station is past life and requires replacement.

1.2 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

1.2.1 CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION INSPECTION

Atriax engaged consultants to perform a closed-circuit television (CCTV) inspection of the force main from the pump station to the upstream manhole and gravity sewer line from the upstream manhole to a manhole south of Building 4A. The sewer lines were inspected on June 13, 2023. Atriax has included a separate report with this submittal titled “Sanitary Sewer Outflow Piping CCTV Investigation”. This report includes detailed information about the CCTV investigation and field observations of the study area.

1.2.2 SEWER LIFT PUMP REPLACEMENT

This project will remove and replace the sewage lift pump located on the first floor of Building 12 that was installed around the time the boiler plant was constructed in 1923. The existing

Contract Number: 36C24723C0085 ATRIAX, PLLC February 12, 2024 Page 2 Project Number: 619A4-23-111 pump currently serves buildings 12, 13, 14, 15, and 65.

Exhibit A shows the buildings that the pump serves.

Although the pump remains operational, if it were to fail replacement parts are not available to repair the pump.

The VA’s 2021 Facility Condition Assessment states that this sewage lift station is past its useful life and recommends replacement.

This project design specifies new duplex sewer pumps that can be serviced along with a basin. This will help to ensure that sewage service to buildings 12, 13, 14, 15, and 65 continues with no interruptions. The Atriax Team will also evaluate the current plumbing requirements associated with this pump to make corrections to ensure there are no deficiencies. The new duplex sewer pumps will be connected to emergency power to provide service in the event of a power outage.

3.0 PLUMBING

3.1 SCOPE OF WORK

The design will specify new duplex sewer pumps with a fiberglass basin. Based on the existing conditions and elevation of the existing piping an above ground basin similar to the existing system is not an option.

The design will provide for an in-ground pump basin that allows for adequate slope for the piping and retention time in the basin for the pumps to operate efficiently. The new system will be located adjacent to the existing pump along the north wall of Building 12.

The new pumps will connect to the existing sanitary piping that drains into the existing pump that will be removed. The existing pump will remain operational while the Contractor prepares the area for the new pumps and basin. To minimize downtime, the new pumps will be operational before removing the existing pump, basin all associated connections.

The basis of design for the new pumps is Zoeller Pump Package: 62 HD Series, model 6221 (duplex pumps).

See Exhibit B and refer to drawings for additional information. The Atriax Team used the Division 22 specifications from the VA Technical Information Library (TIL). The following information was used in the calculations for pump selection: Flow: 207 gallons per minute. Total head: 31 feet. Static head: 18 feet.

The new pumps will be mounted on rails for removal from the basin for maintenance and repair. The pumps will be connected to emergency power. The system will be closed and the basin will vent through the roof to control odor. Refer to Plumbing drawing for more information.

3.2 PIPING

The gravity drain sanitary waste will be hubless cast iron pipe and fittings. The couplings for hubless joints shall conform to CISPI 310.

The pump discharge piping will be galvanized steel pipe and fittings or copper pipe and fittings.

The galvanized pipe will be schedule 40 weight class conforming to ASTM A53/A53M. The fittings will be class 125 gray iron threaded fittings conforming to ASME B16.4. The copper pipe will be hard drawn type L conforming to ASTM B88. The fittings will be wrought copper conforming to ASME B16.22.

3.3 PUMP CONTROLS

Automatic Control and Level Alarm: Provide a control panel in a NEMA 1 enclosure for indoor use. The controls will be suitable for operation with the electrical characteristics listed on the electrical drawings. The control panel will have a level control system with switches to start and stop pumps automatically and to activate a high-water alarm. The level control system will include sensors in the sump that detect the level of the liquid. The sensors may be float type switches, ultrasonic level sensors, transducers, or other appropriate equipment. The high-water alarm shall have a red beacon light at the control panel and a buzzer, horn, or bell. The alarm shall have a silencing switch.

4.0 ELECTRICAL

4.1 BUILDING 12 ELECTRICAL SERVICE

4.1.1 The current Building 12 electrical system has been disconnected and abandoned. At the time of the original survey, there was no power available to serve the new electric pump.

4.1.2 During a subsequent field survey visit, a construction team was on site installing a new generator, a new automatic transfer switch in adjacent building, and new 480-volt and 208-volt panels. The new panels were being installed on the second floor of Building 12, which houses the pump.

4.1.3 The new electric sewage pumps will be 480-volt, 3-phase, 7.5-HP each. A new 20-ampere, 3-pole breaker section will be installed for each in the existing panel PP12-1.
