About this file

This document is a Fire Pump Inspection Checklist template based on NFPA 25 standards for inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) of water-based fire protection systems. The checklist is designed for weekly inspections of fire pump systems and is sourced from Exhibit 8.21 of the NFPA 25 Handbook.

The checklist covers four primary system categories requiring inspection: Pump House conditions (heating, ventilation, water accumulation, and coupling guards); Pump Systems (valve positions, piping integrity, pressure readings, suction reservoir levels, and waterflow test valve conditions); Electrical Systems (controller and transfer switch indicators, phase rotation, motor oil levels, and jockey pump power status); and Diesel Engine Systems (fuel tank levels, controller settings, battery voltage and charging readings, battery pilot lights, heat maintenance, and engine running time). Additional inspection items address water-jacket heaters, cooling systems, crankcase oil levels, battery terminals, flexible hose conditions, lube oil levels, and fuel tank water contamination. The template includes sections for steam-driven pump systems and exhaust system evaluations. Each inspection item includes Yes/No/Not Applicable response options. The form requires completion of property identification information, inspector details, contract number, date, and contractor credentials including name, address, and license/certification number. A comments section and signature line are provided for documentation purposes. This template is intended as a guide to support compliance with NFPA 25 and does not constitute comprehensive requirements under the standard.

FIRE PUMP INSPECTION CHECKLIST

Fire pumps are an essential part of many water-based fire protection systems. The right design, installation, and acceptance testing of these pumps will help ensure that they are ready to protect the building on the day of the acceptance test. After that, once “the keys” are handed over to the building owner, there is no guarantee that the pump will remain in a ready state to work as designed unless it undergoes routine inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM). This checklist from Exhibit 8.21 of the NFPA 25 Handbook: ITM of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, covers just one aspect of an ITM program in weekly inspections.
