About this file

This document is the Attachment 5 - Marking Directions for the Robie Creek G-Z IRSC Stewardship Contract solicitation. It outlines the requirements for boundary marking, paint markings, and GPS tracking of unit boundaries for the timber removal and service work activities on the Boise National Forest. Key details include:

The contract requires prominent stump marks, inter-visible paint markings on boundary trees, and solid orange flagging of all timber removal units. Boundaries should follow identifiable landscape features when possible. All boundary changes must be documented, and reference points established in case boundaries need reestablishment. GPS will be used for area determination. The solicitation is a Request for Quotes with a due date of July 2, 2024, for the Robie Creek G-Z Stewardship IRSC project on the Boise National Forest, Mountain Home Ranger District. The contract will be awarded under Stewardship Authority and will require the contractor to complete implementation planning, timber removal, non-commercial thinning, and other forest management services.

MARKING DIRECTIONS

Timber Sale Preparation Standards

Boundary marks should be on trees that will remain after harvest and have the unit number facing in towards the unit, so it is visible when approaching the boundary from within the unit. Additional marks shall be placed on the sides of the trees, so that the boundary trees are inter-visible when walking a boundary (see Exhibit 1). Where paint exists from previous sale marking, notify the Forest Service for further instruction.

All marked trees will have a prominent stump mark on the downhill (or lowest) side of the tree so the paint mark cannot be easily knocked off during skidding operations. The stump mark shall be of sufficient size (~3-4” band or dot) to be readily seen and shall be placed at ground level in crevices in the bark extending into the duff layer.

Establish unit boundaries along identifiable features such as roads, stand types, ridges, RCAs, slope breaks, etc., when consistent with logging and silvicultural needs. When boundaries border system roads, boundary marking may only be needed to eliminate any confusion as to the location of the boundary, otherwise no paint or flagging will be needed. When revising unit boundaries, completely remove deleted boundary marks from all trees by scraping off marks and/or completely covering with black tracer paint. Document all boundary changes. All Timber Removal Units shall be flagged with solid orange flagging, then painted with designated tracer paint as described and shown in Exhibit 1, except along virtual boundaries. Boundary tags will only be utilized in areas of high visual impacts such as campgrounds where residual paint is not desired to be seen post-harvest.

All boundaries, including virtual shall be tracked with a GPS. When traversing unit boundaries for area-based cruises, identify and establish a reference point in case the boundary needs reestablishment at a later date. Be certain the reference point is easily identifiable to relocate. Maintain and secure all traverse notes in the sale folder. Area determination done by GPS will follow direction in Attachment 7 - FSH 2409.12 Chapter 50 Area Determination Standards Excerpt 1.

EXHIBIT 1: Boise National Forest – Standardized Boundary Timber Marking Symbols Two horizontal slashes at DBH facing into the harvest unit with Unit number between slashes. Also, on both sides of the tree a vertical line so the paint marks are inter-visible while looking along the boundary line. Additionally, stump marks at the base of the tree on the downhill or lowest side. An alternative method may be used, a horizontal strip with two vertical strips and the number inside the semi box. This method is more visible in dense vegetation and uses less paint. There is less confusion with adjacent leave tree units when a horizontal strip clear around the trees is used.
