Summary of flow hydraulics and particle mobility/stability for the reference-reach channel (L) and stream simulation design channel using the modified critical shear stress approach. A.

Reference reach (L) hydraulics and particle mobility. B. Preliminary stream simulation design channel (L) hydraulics and particle mobility. C. Stream simulation design channel (Slope0.085) hydraulics and adjusted particle sizes to achieve similar particle mobility as the reference-reach channel.

Particle Mobility/Stability

A. Reference reach: H

Angle of repose φD84 (mm)D50 (mm)

Hydraulics

Step A1: Determine flow hydraulics in the reference reach using HEC-RAS or WinXSPro (this has been done for you).

Step A2: Enter D50 and D84 particle sizes from the reference reach (mm).

Step A3: From table 4-7 obtain the angle of repose for the particle size of interest.

Step A4: Calculate τc-D84 (this calculation has been done for you).

A. Reference Reach

Step A5: Determine D84 particle mobility by comparing τc-D84 to τc (fill in last column, yes or no).

Note: If τc-D84 is less than τc, the particle is mobile.

Step A6: At what discharge is the D84 particle mobilized?

B. Preliminary stream simulation design with a channel-bed gradient of 1% B. Design Channel Step B1: Determine flow hydraulics in the design channel using HEC-RAS or WinXSPro (this has been done for you).

Step B2: Enter D50 and D84 particle sizes of the key pieces from the reference reach (mm).

Step B3: From table 4-7 obtain the angle of repose for the particle size of interest.

Step B4: Calculate τc-D84 (this calculation has been done for you).

Step B5: Determine D84 particle stability of the key pieces by comparing τc-D84 to τc (fill in last column, yes or no).

Note: If τc-D84 is less than τc, the particle is mobile.

Step B6: At what discharge is the D84 key piece particle mobilized?

Step B7: Do the key piece particles in the design channel need to be adjusted to achieve greater stability (if yes, go to C)?

D50 (mm) D84 (mm) Angle of repose φ
