About this file
This document is an identity verification guide establishing acceptable forms of identification for federal purposes. It presents two primary categories of documents: those that establish identity and secondary forms of identification used to support identity proofing.
Documents that establish identity include U.S. passports, Permanent Resident Cards (Form I-551), Employment Authorization Documents with photographs (Form I-766), and RealID Act-compliant driver's licenses or identification cards issued by states or U.S. possessions. For nonimmigrant aliens authorized to work for specific employers, acceptable documentation consists of a foreign passport paired with Form I-94 or I-94A bearing the same name and a valid nonimmigrant status endorsement. The guide explicitly rejects driver's licenses or identification cards marked "NOT APPLICABLE FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES." Secondary identity documents include state-issued enhanced driver's licenses, Border Crossing Cards (DSP-150), government-issued identification cards with photographs and biographical information, Veteran Health Identification Cards, Department of Homeland Security Trusted Traveler Cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST), U.S. Certificates of Naturalization or Citizenship (Form N-550), school identification cards with photographs, and U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credentials. For individuals under 18 unable to present primary documents, acceptable alternatives include school records, day care records, or birth certificates. Supporting documents requiring a second form of photographic identification include Social Security Number cards, birth certificates with official seals, Certifications of Birth Abroad (Form FS-545), Certifications of Report of Birth (Form DS-1350), and voter's registration cards.
