About this file
This document consists of three specification sections for construction and rehabilitation of stone bases for portal signs at Allegheny National Forest. The sections detail technical requirements for cast-in-place concrete, stone masonry veneer installation, and masonry restoration and cleaning work.
Section 03 30 00 specifies cast-in-place concrete requirements including ready-mixed concrete compliant with ASTM C 94, deformed reinforcing bars (ASTM A 615/A 615M, Grade 60), and Portland cement (ASTM C 150, Type I, 1A, III, or IIIA). Concrete mixes must achieve minimum compressive strength of 4000 psi at 28 days, maintain a 4-inch slump limit, and contain 5.5 to 7.0 percent air content. Submittals require concrete mix designs, field test reports documenting temperature, slump, and air entrainment, 28-day compression test reports, plant batch tickets, mill test reports for reinforcing steel, and aggregate test reports meeting ASTM C 33. Field testing must be performed by ACI Concrete Field Testing Technicians (Grade I or II). Concrete placement requires compliance with ACI standards for hot and cold weather concreting, with temperature controls specified (heating when below 40°F; cooling when above 90°F for hot weather). Curing must occur for at least seven days using either moist curing or clear-drying curing compound. For on-site pours, contractors must engage independent testing agencies to perform concrete testing and submit test reports, with both test cylinders broken at 28 days.
Section 04 43 01 specifies stone masonry veneer using Cultured Stone by Westlake Royal Stone Solutions (Echo Ridge Dressed Fieldstone or approved equal) installed in random running bond with consistent joint widths. Setting mortar must comply with ASTM C 270, Type S using the Proportion Method, while pointing mortar must be Type N using the Property Method. Installation requires full mortar setting beds with setting buttons or shims to maintain correct joint width, horizontal and vertical seismic reinforcement at 16-inch centers, and watertight top flashings with minimum 6-inch lap on end joints. Joints for sealant must be raked out 5/8 to 3/4 inch deep and filled with pointing mortar worked to concave joints. Section 04 50 00 addresses masonry restoration and cleaning requiring contractors with minimum five years of successful experience in comparable projects. Cleaning uses a three-step process: ProSoCo Sure Klean 766 Limestone and Masonry Prewash, Sure Klean Limestone and Masonry Afterwash, and Sure Klean Weather Seal Siloxane PD Natural Stone Treatment (or approved equivalents by Sika or Thuro). Repointing requires sample areas 2 feet high by 2 feet wide demonstrating mortar removal methods and pointing workmanship. Mortar joints must be raked to depths equal to 2.5 times their widths (minimum 3/4 inch) and repointed in layers not exceeding 3/8 inch, with each layer becoming thumbprint-hard before the next application. Stone repair uses two-part polyester resin adhesive (Akemi products) for fragments under 6 inches, with larger fragments anchored using 1/4-inch stainless steel rods at 45-degree angles. All repointing and repair work requires air temperatures between 40°F and 80°F, maintained for at least 48 hours after completion, with mortar kept damp for 72 hours. Final cleaning must use only non-metallic tools and low-pressure water spray without acid or alkali agents.

1. For mixer capacity of 1 cu. yd. (0.76 cu. m) or smaller, continue mixing at least 1-1/2 minutes, but not more than 5 minutes after ingredients are in mixer, before any part of batch is released.
2. For mixer capacity larger than 1 cu. yd. (0.76 cu. m), increase mixing time by 15 seconds for each additional 1 cu. yd. (0.76 cu. m).
C. Provide batch ticket for each batch discharged and used in the Work, indicating Project identification name and number, date, mix type, mix time, quantity, and amount of water added. Record approximate location of final deposit in structure.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 CONCRETING
A. Construct formwork and maintain tolerances and surface irregularities within ACI 117 limits of Class A for concrete exposed to view and Class C for other concrete surfaces.
B. Accurately position, support and secure reinforcement, threaded anchors and other embedded items.
C. If concrete is delivered and not mixed on site. Do not add water to concrete during delivery, at Project site, or during placement.
D. Place concrete in a continuous operation as much as possible and consolidate using mechanical vibrating equipment. Properly address cold joints and place them at proper locations to minimize future concrete performance issues.
E. Protect concrete from physical damage, premature drying, and reduced strength due to hot or cold weather during mixing, placing, and curing according to ACI specifications.
F. Formed Surface Finish: Smooth-formed finish for concrete exposed to view, coated, or covered by waterproofing or other direct-applied material; rough-formed finish elsewhere.
G. Slab Finishes: Trowel finish.
H. Cure formed surfaces by either moist curing for at least seven days or using concrete curing compound that dries clear. Apply per manufacturer’s requirements.
I. Begin curing concrete immediately after finishing.
J. For on-site pours, Contractor will engage an independent testing Agency to perform concrete temperature, slump, entrained air content and 2 test break tests per pour day and to submit test reports. Both test cylinders to be broken at 28 days.
K. Protect concrete from damage. Repair surface defects in formed concrete and slabs.
3.2 Cold Weather Placing:
A. Protect concrete work from physical damage or reduced strength which could be caused by frost, freezing actions, or low temperatures, in compliance with ACI 306 and as herein specified.
B. When air temperature has fallen to or is expected to fall below 40 F (4 C), uniformly heat water and aggregates before mixing to obtain a concrete mixture temperature of not less 50 (10 C), and not more than 80 F (27 C) at point of placement.
C. Do not use frozen materials or materials containing ice or snow. Do not place concrete on frozen subgrade or subgrade containing frozen materials.
D. Do not use calcium chloride, salt or other materials containing antifreeze agents or chemical accelerators, unless other wise accepted in mix designs.
3.3 Hot Weather Placing:
A. When hot weather conditions exist that would seriously impair quality and strength of concrete, place concrete in compliance with ACI 305 and as herein specified.
B. Cool ingredients before mixing to maintain concrete temperature at time of placement below 90 F (32 C).
C. Mixing water may be chilled, or chopped ice may be used to control temperature provided water equivalent of ice is calculated to total amount of mixing water.
