About this file

This document contains item specifications for the Potato Patch Prairie project, Items 5 and 6, detailing forestry and vegetation management work requirements.

The specifications require cutting of conifers less than 8 inches diameter at breast height (DBH), excluding trees marked with silver tags or orange flagging designated as RTV trees, and all dead conifers less than 4 inches DBH. Hardwoods less than 8 inches DBH and all dead hardwoods less than 4 inches DBH must be cut. All specified conifers, hardwoods, and brush species including poison oak and Himalayan blackberry greater than 1 foot tall shall be cut to a 6-inch stump height, with an exception to leave native brush species within 10 feet of Himalayan blackberry or poison oak. A 25-foot no-cut buffer must be maintained around all streams. Protected brush species include California hazel, ocean spray, whitebark raspberry, and gummy gooseberry.

Limbing and bucking of slash is required to facilitate handling and piling, with slash bucked to 6 feet or less in length. All felled boles must be limbed and severed at an 8-inch top, with boles greater than 8 inches excluded from hand piling. Dead and down material 5 inches or less must be limbed, bucked, and hand piled. Hand piling requirements specify that slash between ½ inch and 8 inches in diameter and at least 1 foot in length be piled, with piles positioned minimum 15 feet from unit boundaries, snags, and marked trees. Piles shall not be placed on or within 8 feet of decadent stumps and downed logs, with preference to concentrate piles underneath Douglas-fir greater than 8 inches DBH or alternatively on cut stumps of tanoak or madrone. No piling is permitted within 25 feet of streams.
