About this file
This document contains item specifications for a vegetation management contract at Miller Prairie (Items 3 & 4). The work requires selective cutting and removal of trees and brush species based on diameter at breast height (DBH) thresholds and species type. Conifers less than 8 inches DBH must be cut, along with dead conifers smaller than 4 inches DBH. Hardwoods less than 6 inches DBH and dead hardwoods smaller than 4 inches DBH must be removed. Within 30 feet of California Black Oak and Oregon White Oak greater than 6 inches DBH, a radial release operation requires cutting all conifers less than 12 inches DBH, with exceptions for trees marked with orange flagging. Girdling of Douglas-fir up to 30 inches DBH is required in the same area, excluding flagged trees. All cut materials, including brush species such as poison oak and Himalayan blackberry exceeding 1 foot in height, must be cut back to 6-inch stump height.
Additional specifications mandate no-cut buffers within 25 feet of all streams and protection of Oregon white oak, California black oak, bigleaf maple, California hazel, woodland rose, and gummy gooseberry. All felled material must be limbed and bucked to 6 feet or less in length, with boles severed at 8-inch tops. Dead and down material 5 inches or smaller must be limbed, bucked, and hand piled. Hand piling requirements specify that slash between ½ inch and 8 inches in diameter and at least 1 foot long be piled in minimum 15-foot setbacks from unit boundaries, fence lines, oaks, snags, and flagged trees, with no piling within 25 feet of streams or 8 feet of decadent stumps and downed logs.
