About this file

This document contains item specifications for a vegetation management project at Bald Mountain Meadows (Items 1 & 2).

The specifications establish detailed requirements for cutting, girdling, and hand piling of vegetation. Contractors must cut all conifers less than 12 inches diameter at breast height (DBH), with exceptions for trees marked with silver tags or orange flagging, and must cut dead conifers less than 6 inches DBH. All hardwoods less than 8 inches DBH must be cut. Douglas-fir trees within the meadow footprint measuring 30 inches DBH and less must be girdled, except within 50 feet uphill of the 020 road and marked trees. All cut material, including brush species (coyote brush, manzanita, rhododendron, and Himalayan blackberry) greater than 1 foot tall, must be cut back to 6-inch stump height; salal brush is exempt from cutting. Bigleaf maple trees and California hazel, elderberry, and woodland rose brush are protected and must not be cut. A 25-foot no-cut buffer must be maintained around all streams. Limbing and bucking of slash is required with material bucked to 6 feet or less in length and boles limbed to an 8-inch top. Hand piling is required for slash measuring ½ inch to 8 inches in diameter and at least one foot in length, with piles positioned at minimum 15 feet from unit boundaries, protected trees, and snags, and preferably located underneath Douglas-fir trees greater than 12 inches DBH or on cut stumps of tanoak, canyon live oak, or madrone. No piling is permitted within 25 feet of streams or within 8 feet of decadent stumps and downed logs.
