SECTION 01 1100 SUMMARY OF WORK

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A. Project Identification:

1. Project Location: BUILDING 1004

MISSION, SOUTH DAKOTA

2. Owner’s Name: Bureau of Indian Affairs, Great Plains Region, Division of Facilities

3. Asbestos Removal Designer:

Legend Technical Services, Inc., 88 Empire Drive, St Paul, MN 55103 – 651-221-4085 or 612-619- 6547 (cell phone). Cheryl A Sykora, CIH,CSP,CHMM, SDRP – South Dakota certified asbestos designer #9566.

C. Work Scope –

Includes the removal of the following:

General Information

Building 1004 was historically utilized as a Boy’s dormitory and converted to an administration building.

The building is two levels with the lower, basement level predominantly mechanical crawlspaces. The drawings provided by Farris Engineering show the general layout of the building and the mechanical systems to be demolished as part of the planned mechanical changes in the building. A building survey performed in 1989 identified asbestos in mechanical system insulation. Any thermal system insulation that is not obviously fiberglass will be considered asbestos and will be removed in accordance with these asbestos remediation specifications. NOTE: the possibility exists that fiberglass was added later over the existing asbestos materials and the abatement contractor should investigate prior to assuming it is fiberglass.

Specific Scope

Ceiling Tile and associated glue pucks – ground/first floor hallways have a ceiling tile glued to gypsum wallboard. The remediation work includes removing all the vintage fluorescent light fixtures from the ceiling and removing the ceiling tile/glue pucks to the GWB substrate. Work needs to be coordinated with building occupants and all hallways may not be available for abatement at one time.

Crawlspace Piping – The intent of this renovation is to replace all of the piping in the crawlspaces located on either side of the basement central main area. The crawlspaces are dirt floored and may have pieces of insulation on the surface. Visible insulation pieces are to be removed first and then the objective is to wrap the pipe lengths and use glovebag techniques to remove sections of insulation to cut the piping into manageable lengths.

Boiler Room – The intent of the renovation is to remove all the existing mechanical systems and replace with new systems. The boiler(s) are still operating and will require investigation at the time of demolition to identify and remove any asbestos-containing material by the abatement contractor at the time of demolition. The piping and tanks have asbestos insulation that will require abatement prior to removing.

The boiler flue has asbestos containing insulation and the intent is to re-use the opening for future exhaust. The opening needs to be open and free of any asbestos containing materials. When the abatement contractor is completed in the boiler room there will be no asbestos-containing materials

Other thermal system insulation as needed – It is anticipated that the renovation may require small areas of asbestos removal to accomplish some of the work. This will require coordination with the trades involved to identify what is needed. It is the responsibility of the abatement contractor to bring this to the attention of the General Contractor to get addressed in the most cost-effective manner avoiding additional site visits to accommodate missed items.

D. Drawings –

The mechanical drawings produced by others show the extent of the piping in the crawlspace and the layout of the hallway ceilings. Consult those for information.

1.02 WORK SEQUENCING

3.2.1.2 Still wearing respirators, proceed to showers. Showering is mandatory. Care must be taken to follow reasonable procedures in removing the respiratory to avoid asbestos fibers while showering. The following procedure is required as a minimum:

Thoroughly wet body including hair and face. If using a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) hold blower unit above head to keep canisters dry. With respirator still in place, thoroughly wash body, hair, respirator face piece and all parts of the respiratory except the blower unit and battery pack on PAPR. Pay particular attention to seal between face and respirator and under straps. Take a deep breath, hold it and/or exhale slowly, completely wet hair, face, and respirator. While still holding breath, remove respirator and hold it away from face before starting to breath. Carefully wash facepiece of respirator inside and out.

3.2.1.3. If using PAPR, shut down in the following sequence. First cap inlets to filter cartridges, then turn off blower unit (this sequence will help keep debris which as collected on the inlet side of filter from dislodging and contaminating the outside of the unit). Thoroughly wash blower unit and hoses. Carefully wash battery pack with wet rag. Be extremely cautious of getting water in battery pack as this will short out and destroy battery.

3.2.1.4 Shower completely with soap and water. Rinse thoroughly. Rinse shower room walls and floor prior to exit. Proceed from shower to changing room and change into street clothes or into new disposable work items.

3.3 DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURES – GLOVE BAG/WRAP AND CUT PIPE REMOVAL
