About this file

This document is an Attachment to a solicitation for Electrolyzer Stack Heat Exchangers for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Flatirons hydrogen facility. The technical specifications require five plate-type heat exchangers with specific performance capabilities: HXs 1-3 must reject > 1 MW of heat, while HXs 4-5 must reject > 1.5 MW of heat. The heat exchangers will manage heat transfer between two fluid systems - a hot side of Type I deionized water and a cold side of 50/50 water/propylene glycol with corrosion inhibitor. Critical technical requirements include ASME pressure code compliance, maximum operating temperatures of 200°F, specific pressure tolerances, designated flow rates, and passivation in accordance with ASTM A967. The heat exchangers will be delivered to NREL's Flatirons Campus in Arvada, Colorado, and are designed for operation at a 6,040 ft altitude within a climate-controlled enclosure.

"Electrolyzer Stack Heat Exchangers"

OBJECTIVE

These heat exchangers (HX) will utilize a supply of coolant fluid to remove heat from the deionized water utilized by electrolysis stacks at the new Flatirons hydrogen facility.

SPECIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED CAPABILITIES:

A total of five HXs shall be delivered.

The heat exchangers shall be plate-type heat exchangers The HXs shall be compatible with the process fluids that are:

o Hot side: Type I deionized water Conductivity of water will range from 1-18 MOhm-cm Maximum operational temperature 200 F (93 C).

o Cold side: 50/50 water/propylene glycol with corrosion inhibitor (e.g., Dynalene PG).

Maximum operational temperature 200 F (93 C) No sulfur-containing components (e.g., lubricants ) shall be used in the wetted sections of the hot side (Type I deionized water) of the HXs.

Pressure-containing portions of the HX shall be designed to the applicable sections of ASME pressure codes.

The HXs shall be American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) rated for process fluid parameters specified below HXs shall be passivated in accordance with ASTM A967 or material selected properly cleaned for Type I DI water service on the Hot (DI water) side.

Fittings shall be ANSI flanged fittings Include delivery costs and freight to NREL Flatirons Campus: 19001 W 119th Ave, Arvada, CO 80007 The heat exchangers shall be designed for operation at an altitude of 6,040 ft NREL will provide a climate-controlled enclosure in which the heat exchangers shall be deployed The technical specifications for sizing each HX are listed below:

o HXs 1, 2, & 3:

Operational heat exchange shall be capable of rejecting > 1 MW (3.412 MMBtu/hr of heat at the following conditions:
