About this file
This document is a Technical Specifications attachment for MMW Electrolyzer Stack Heat Exchangers, dated 8/20/2025. The procurement is for 5 heat exchangers to support a 20-million-dollar test platform for electrolyzer research, with two distinct size configurations. The heat exchangers will cool electrolyzers using a 50/50 propylene glycol/water mixture on the "cold side" and Type 1 deionized water on the "hot side", with specific technical requirements including ASME stamping, operational temperatures up to 200°F, and maximum working pressures of 100-150 psi.
The two heat exchanger sizes have different thermal rejection and flow rate specifications: HX-1, 2, and 3 models are capable of rejecting over 1 MW with glycol flow rates of 416 gpm and DI water flow rates of 620 gpm, while HX-4 and 5 models can reject over 1.5 MW with glycol flow rates of 625 gpm and DI water flow rates of 940 gpm. Both configurations have glycol inlet temperatures of 113°F and DI water inlet temperatures of 140°F. The research group will handle installation in a pre-allocated dedicated space, with no subcontracts planned for the heat exchanger installation.

Attachment 1 Technical Specifications
"MMW Electrolyzer Stack Heat Exchangers"
8/20/2025
BACKGROUND
This purchase is to acquire quantity 5 heat exchangers (HX) to allow cooling of the electrolyzer stacks being tested as part of the Multimegawatt (MMW) Electrolyzer project.
The process fluid on one side of the heat exchanger will be 50/50 propylene glycol/water “cold side” and the other will be DI water “hot side”. The DI water side will need to be cleaned and passivated for Type 1 DI water.
OBJECTIVE
The MMW Electrolyzer project goal is to create a test platform for new electrolyzers that will be provided by research partners and/or industry. These heat exchangers will cool those electrolyzers to allow testing and operation. They are an integral part of the 20-million-dollar test platform being constructed for the MMW Electrolyzer Project.
SPECIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED CAPABILITIES
Please see file: Attachment 1A - DI HX Equipment Description.PDF for the full list of requirements. The summary of requirements is below.
Summary of Capabilities:
o 50/50% propylene glycol and water will be “cold side” process fluid o Type 1 DI water will be “hot side “process fluid.
o ASME stamp for heat exchangers will be required.
o Operational temperature up to 200 F (93 C) for both sides of heat exchanger o Glycol “cold side” Maximum working pressure of 100 psi o DI Water “hot side” Maximum working pressure of 150 psi o Pressure drop across heat exchanger on either side must be less than 15 psi
Two sizes of heat exchanger will be purchased:
o HX – 1, 2, and 3
Capable of rejecting greater than 1 MW Glycol flow rate: 416 gpm Glycol inlet temperature: 113 F (45 C) DI water flow rate: 620 gpm DI water inlet temperature: 140 F (60 C) o HX – 4 and 5 Capable of rejecting greater than 1.5 MW Glycol flow rate: 625 gpm Glycol inlet temperature: 113 F (45 C) DI water flow rate: 940 gpm DI water inlet temperature: 140 F (60 C)
TECHNICAL OR SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Heat exchangers must be ASME pressure stamped for requested pressure and temperature.
Space Requirements/ Limitations o Installation will be by the research group into an already allocated dedicated space.
There are no plans for any subcontracts or operations work for the installation of these heat exchangers.
