About this file
This is a Statement of Objectives (SOO) for the procurement of ten hydrogen water dropout heat exchangers for the Multimegawatt (MMW) Electrolyzer project. The heat exchangers will cool hydrogen process streams produced by PEM electrolyzer stacks, operating in five paired systems where two heat exchangers function in series per system. The equipment will manage process fluids consisting of 50/50 propylene glycol/water coolant and hydrogen saturated with deionized water, with initial phase separation and water removal occurring through a coalescing filter.
All ten heat exchangers must be manufactured from 316/316L stainless steel with no sulfur-containing components in hydrogen-wetted sections, designed to applicable ASME pressure codes, and equipped with 1.5-inch Swagelok compression or ANSI raised face flange fittings. HXs 1-5 and 9-10 require 50/50 water/propylene glycol cooling on the cold side, while HXs 6-10 have hydrogen saturated with deionized water on the cold side. Specific technical requirements vary by heat exchanger grouping, including maximum allowable working pressures ranging from 100-1087 psi, pressure drops of 0.1-1.03 bar, maximum working temperatures exceeding 200°F, inlet temperatures between 37-185°F, and flow rates between 256-395 SCFM. All hydrogen-wetted surfaces must be electropolished or passivated per ASTM A967 for Type I deionized water service with conductivity of 1-17 MOhm-cm. Delivery is required by September 2026, with August 2026 preferred, to NLR Flatirons Campus in Arvada, Colorado, with delivery costs and freight included in pricing.

"Hydrogen Water Dropout Heat Exchangers"
1/29/2026
BACKGROUND
This purchase is to acquire a quantity of 10 heat exchangers (HX) that will cool the hydrogen process stream produced by PEM electrolyzer stacks being tested as part of the Multimegawatt (MMW) Electrolyzer project. The process fluids will be 50/50 propylene glycol/water and hydrogen saturated with water. The portions of each heat exchanger containing hydrogen need to be cleaned and passivated for service with DI water.
OBJECTIVE
Two heat exchangers (HX) will be operated in series and five pairs of HXs are required.
Initial phase separation will occur upstream of hot side inlet of HXs 6-10. HXs 6-10 will provide a small amount of initial cooling of a warm hydrogen stream which is saturated with water and has potential to have liquid water in the stream. Two phase flow is expected on the inlet of the hot side of HXs 1-5. The cold side of HXs 1-5 is a 50/50 water glycol mix providing cooling the hydrogen stream. The purpose of this cooling is to bring the dew point of the hydrogen stream down to 8°C forcing water saturated in the hydrogen gas into the liquid water. The liquid water is then removed using a coalescing filter. The stream of saturated hydrogen gas is then returned through the cold side of HXs 6-10 allowing slight reheating of the hydrogen gas stream to reduce the potential of liquid water condensing out of hydrogen gas creating single phase fluid flow.
Figure 1 directly below shows the flow path and fluids through the HXs. This procurement is for ten heat exchangers, accounting for five of the systems shown in Figure 1. HX’s 1-3 will be paired with HX’s 6-8 respectively in the layout shown below.
HX’s 4 and 5 will be paired with HX’s 9 and 10 respectively in the same layout. The critical temperatures are also shown in this drawing.
