1.0 OVERVIEW & PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project includes the renewal of aged photovoltaic system components that are essential to maintain facility usage for the Polebridge area of Glacier National Park.

Polebridge is a remote area of the Park that is off-grid of any electrical utility. The Ranger Station, housing area, and other facilities depend on solar energy for year-round operation. If solar energy becomes inadequate, a pair of backup propane generators charge the solar batteries to supply power to the area.

Three pole-mounted photovoltaic arrays, lead-acid AGM batteries, charge controllers, inverters, and other electrical equipment were installed in Polebridge in 2016. The arrays are located outside of the Polebridge Ranger Station, and all equipment is housed in the B#1449 Polebridge Generator Building.

The existing batteries are aged and functioning poorly. The batteries typically fail to meet a full day’s energy demand on sunny days and this problem is escalated on overcast or smoky days. These issues create a dependence on the backup propane generators.

This project includes replacing failing batteries, including updating and programming for compatibility and optimal performance with the existing inverter and charge controller system.

All work is to occur at B#1449 Polebridge Generator Building. The nearest address is for the Polebridge Ranger Station - 714 Glacier Drive, Polebridge, MT 59928.

2.0 EXISTING CONDITIONS

The existing solar panels are located just outside of the Polebridge Ranger Station. System components are housed in B#1449 Polebridge Generator Building.

Please note that NPS will make several modifications to B#1449 prior to the start of work under this contract. These modifications will be completed by NPS and are not a part of the contracted scope of work. This is required to mitigate safety hazards in the building. These modifications include:

A. Removal of two existing generators B. Removal of the existing ventilation fan that is immediately to the right of the entrance doors C. Removal of existing oil drums D. Construction of a partition wall in B#1449

1. The partition wall will create a separate room (approximately 5’ to 6’ wide) to enclose the proposed batteries in a separate area from the remainder of the building. The partition wall will have a door immediately to the right of the existing entrance doors. The space will be ventilated to the exterior of the building.

E. Installation of a small heater unit within the partition wall to provide a climate-controlled space for the batteries F. Installation of explosion-proof lighting G. Commissioning of two new Kohler backup generators, located in an enclosure on the exterior of B#1449.

The existing system includes:

A. Three pole-mounted solar arrays

1. Ten panels per array (five by two grid), SolarWorld SW340XL Black, 340W solar panels B. Outback EnergyCell 2700RE Battery Rack

1. 48V total, consisting of 24 (four by six grid) 2V, 2288Ah lead-acid AGM batteries

2. Steel battery rack, approximately 75”H x 28”D x 57”W and 8,266 lbs. total

3. Programmed for a 50% depth of discharge to provide approximately 55kWh of the possible 110kWh C. Schneider Electric Conext XW+ System

1. Conext MPPT 80-600 charge controllers x 3 (one for each solar array)

2. Conext XW+ 6048 Inverters x 2

3. Conext PDP Power Distribution Panel

4. Conext SCP Solar System Control Panel x 1

5. Conext AGS Automatic Generator Start System x 2

6. InsightHome Energy Management Device

Photos of the existing conditions and schematic of the proposed modifications are included in Attachment 1.2 Polebridge Generator Building Site Photos.
