About this file
This is a memorandum documenting salient characteristics for a federal contract solicitation for an Additive Manufacturing (AM)/3D printer system for the 3rd Maintenance Squadron Metals Technology section. The system must support production of parts, tools, fixtures, and prototypes using Fused Deposition Modeling with advanced materials including TPU-92, Nylon Carbon Fiber, and elastomers to meet military-grade fitting tolerances for home-station and deployed/austere locations.
The minimum specifications require a printer system operating at 110-120V/50-60Hz with maximum power draw of 20 amps, machine dimensions not exceeding 72 x 36 x 36 inches, and build area between 10 x 10 x 10 inches minimum and 16 x 16 x 18 inches maximum. The system must feature a fully heated and enclosed build chamber, model and support material auto-changeover capability, layer printing capability between 0.005-0.013 inches, dimensional accuracy of ±0.200 mm (±0.008 inches) or ±0.002 mm per mm, breakaway or soluble support structures, and exchangeable extrusion tips with dedicated print heads for Thermoplastics, Carbon Fiber, and Elastomer materials. The vendor must supply licensed file processing software, provide training for a minimum of four individuals, perform machine start-up and assembly, supply an initial consumable kit including one ABS filament canister, soluble support material, and build sheets, and provide additional consumable inventory including multiple canisters of Nylon Carbon Fiber, TPU, ASA, ABS Carbon Fiber materials, soluble support materials, and dedicated print heads. All warranty information must be included in the proposal.

MEMORANDUM FOR 673CONS/PKB
FROM: 3 MXS/MXMFM
SUBJECT: Additive Manufacturing (AM)/3D printer System
1. The purpose of this memorandum is to document the salient characteristics which will be used in the solicitation for this requirement. The 3d Maintenance Squadron Metals Technology section has currently been locally manufacturing parts, tools, fixtures and prototypes with Fused
Disposition Modeling utilizing thermoplastics. The need for TPU-92, Nylon Carbon Fiber and elastomer materials are needed to fulfill the demand to produce stronger parts, tools, fixtures and prototypes to support the 3rd Wing’s mission at home-station and in deployed/austere locations and meet tolerances required for military grade fittings.
2. Minimum Specifications:
• Must have a maximum printer system operating power of 110-120V/50-60Hz, not to exceed 20 amps to utilize on a standard 120V wall outlet.
• Must not exceed the Maximum Machine size of 72 in. x 36 in. x 36 in.) for space constraints to fit in home-station environmentally controlled room and deployment pack-out ISU-90 Storage Containers.
• Must have the minimum build area of 10 in.(x-Width) X 10 in. (y-Depth) X 10 in. (z-
Height) and maximum build area of 16 in.(x-Width) X 16 in. (y-Depth) X 18 in. (z-
Height).
• Must include a fully heated and enclosed build chamber around the heated build plate and nozzle and must stay secured during printing to control cooling rates and prevent dimensional inaccuracies.
• Must have a model and support material auto changeover capability to extend uninterrupted print times.
• Must be able to print/build layers in ranges between .005 in - .013 in. for high resolution printing.
• Must be able to achieve a dimension accuracy of ± 0.200 mm (± 0.008 in.) or ± 0.002 mm per mm, whichever is greater.
• Must have a breakaway or soluble support structure for steep angles/overhangs depending on material.
• Must have heated build plates, specialized bed surfaces, physical adhesion aids, and/or slicer settings to prevent material from lifting or warping.
• Must be able to print in solid fill, sparse high density, or sparse low density interior infill.
• Must use exchangeable extrusion tips in print head.
• Must be able to provide dedicated print heads for Thermoplastics, Carbon Fiber and
Elastomer materials
• Must have an onboard calibration capability.
• Must be capable of printing the following model filament materials:
o ABS o ABS-Carbon Fiber o ASA o PC-ABS o Nylon Carbon Fiber o Nylon Thermoplastic, mineral filled for durability o TPU - Thermo Plastic Polyurethane
3. Additional requirements:
• Include any/all warranty information.
• Must include licensed file processing software to operate the machine and materials.
• Confirmation Vendor can include training for a minimum of (4) individuals
• Confirmation that Vendor can perform Machine start-up, to include assembling any components, testing, and operational run as required.
• Confirmation Vendor can include dedicated print heads for Thermoplastics, Carbon Fiber and Elastomer materials.
• Confirmation Vendor can supply an initial/basic consumable Kit and have the following accessory items and raw materials available:
Initial Consumable Kit (Basic Kit):
o One (1) FDM ABS Filament Canister/Roll/Spool o One (1) FDM Soluble Release Support Material Canister/Roll/Spool o One (1) Package of Build Sheets/Trays o Standard Thermoplastics Extrusion Print Head(s)
Additional Consumable/Accessory/Raw Materials Availability:
o Two (2) FDM Nylon Carbon Fiber Filament Canisters/Rolls o Two (2) FDM TPU Thermo Plastic Polyurethane Filament Canisters/Rolls o Two (2) FDM ASA (Black) Filament Canister/rolls o Two (2) FDM ABS Carbon Fiber (Black) Filament Canister o Six (6) FDM Soluble Release Support Material Canisters/Rolls o One (1) Box build sheets/trays Qty 16 o Dedicated Print Heads (Standard Thermoplastics, Carbon Fiber, & Elastomer
Materials)
