About this file
This document is an Item Description for a Department of the Air Force contract opportunity for Magnetic Particle Inspection Bench Replacement at Tinker Air Force Base. The solicitation requires the purchase of five total inspection benches: three Magnetic Particle Inspection Benches (Model 3509A-01) and two Magnetic Particle Disk Inspection Benches (Model 3606).
The detailed specifications outline rigorous technical requirements for both bench types, including capabilities for magnetizing aircraft and engine parts in multiple directions, advanced electronic controls with self-diagnostic features, precise current control, digital readout meters, and compliance with ASTM E1444 standards. Both bench models require specific electrical utilities (230/460-volt or 460/480-volt, 60 Hz, 3 phase), have specific dimensional footprint requirements, and include features like stainless steel holding tanks, magnetic particle agitation systems, and various magnetization/demagnetization operational modes. The benches are designed for detailed non-destructive testing of aircraft and engine components with high precision and reliability.

Item Description
Magnetic Particle Inspection Bench Replacement
P25-036
76 PMXG requires the purchase of three (3) Magnetic Particle Inspection Benches (Model 3509A-01) each bench shall include of the following:
Magnetic Particle Inspection Bench must meet the following physical, functional, performance and accessory requirements:
System must be capable of magnetizing aircraft and engine parts both directly and indirectly and in the circular and longitudinal directions. The system must also be designed such that magnetic particle suspension can be applied directly to the component during the magnetization procedure in the wet continuous method.
1. Constructed on a tubular steel framework with full panel finish.
2. Include a power pack with electronic controls having a magnetizing current of at least
6,000 amperes AC and 6,000 amperes 3 Phase FWDC. Unit must also be complete with automatic reversing DC and ramp down AC demagnetization.
3. Power pack must include the most modern state of the art electronics incorporating electronic plug-in modules with self-diagnostic LED’s. The packaging of the electronics within a module enclosure will ensure that no accidental damage can occur and prevents contamination from dirt, dust, or moisture. The self-diagnostic LED display should display should considerably reduce maintenance downtime and trouble shooting.
4. Must be complete with a digital current readout meter with LED display and with a very high accuracy of ±1%. This meter will display a maximum of 9.99 readout and since meter reading is multiplied by a factor of 1,000, this gives a maximum magnetizing current readout of 9,990 amperes. This meter has a hold and display feature and is fitted with a “current assurance” LED. The hold and display feature means that the magnetizing current output level display is continuously held until the next magnetizing shot.
5. Must include infinitely variable current control with precision of at least 1.0 ampere to give absolute choice of magnetizing current between zero and maximum output.
6. Unit must be complete with a standard 16 inch, 5 turn coil, in a movable configuration.
7. Includes hand crank and lock type tailstock and pneumatic headstock clamping capable of handling components up to 100 inches in length.
8. Must fit in the current footprint of 124 x 30 inches.
9. Must be complete with stainless steel holding tank and a highly efficient magnetic particle agitation system. The agitation system is designed to maintain the magnetic particle suspension within ±3% of theoretical.
10. Unit is complete with Quick Break feature to ensure maximum residual magnetism and repeatability of inspection results.
11. Included on the control panel on the face of the unit will be various switches to give the operator a choice of AC/DC current, magnetization/demagnetization operation, and direct contact or coil magnetization.
12. A minimum of one (1) external 115-volt receptacle will be provided.
13. A timer device will be standard that allows adjustment of magnetizing current shot between 1/6 seconds and 1-1/2 seconds. 1/2 seconds shall be default.
14. Must meet all the requirements established in ASTM E1444.
15. Must conform to the following utilities: 230/460-volt, 60 Hz, 3 phase electrical supply and 100 PSI shop air supply.
76 PMXG requires the purchase of two (2) Magnetic Particle Disk Inspection Benches (Model 3606) each bench shall include of the following:
System must magnetize aircraft/engine disc type parts both in circular and longitudinal directions. The maximum diameter of disc that can be accepted is 30", with a height of 12" and the minimum diameter of the bore that can be accepted is 6".
System must be complete with an "induction coil with induction core" for the detection of longitudinal defects and a "knife switch coil" for the detection of transverse defects. The upper bar of the knife switch shall be lifted to open. The system must also be designed so magnetic particle suspension can be applied directly to the component during the magnetization procedure in the wet continuous method for improved sensitivity.
1. Construction will be of tubular steel framework with full panel finish.
2. Must be complete with stainless steel holding tank and a highly efficient magnetic particle agitation system. The agitation system is designed to maintain the magnetic particle suspension within ±3% of theoretical.
3. Complete with highly efficient magnetize particle suspension agitation system designed to maintain the magnetic particle concentration to within ± 3% of theoretical. Include a hose and application nozzle.
4. Supplied with a HWDC power pack which has an output of 12,000 ampere turns through the induction coil and the knife switch. Include an AC component for demagnetizing.
5. Fitted with induction coil/induction core for detection of longitudinal defects and a knife switch coil for detection of transverse defects.
6. State-of-the-art electronics with self-indicating plug-in modules for ease of maintenance and for reliability.
7. Infinitely variable current control included giving absolute choice of magnetizing current between zero and maximum.
8. Digital current readout meter with L.E.D. display and having an accuracy of ±1 %.
The meter shall have a "hold and display" feature whereby the reading is held until the next magnetizing shot.
9. Complete with push-button demagnetization feature (AC) operating through the induction coil/induction core.
10. Must fit in the current footprint of 78-inches x 37-inches.
11. Must meet all requirements established in ASTM E1444.
12. Included on the control panel on the face of the unit will be various switches to give the operator a choice of post/coil magnetization and mag/demag operation.
13. Must conform to the following utilities: 460/480-volt, 60 Hz, 3 phase electrical supply.
