PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 ERECTION, INSTALLATION, APPLICATION
A. Installation
1. Install brick reinforcement in the same location and manner as concrete block reinforcement.
2. Wetting Bricks: Provide enough brick suction to hold mortar and to absorb water from mortar and grout. Provide brick damp enough so mortar remains plastic, permitting brick to be leveled and plumbed without destroying bond.
3. Set units plumb, true to line, and with level courses accurately spaced.
4. Use line blocks when possible. When a line pin is necessary, fill the hole immediately after the pin is withdrawn.
5. Use brick that are clean and free from dust and other foreign matter.
6. Except where shown on Drawings, provide running bond with vertical joints centered over units in course below.
7. Bevel bed joints, sloping toward center of wall so bed joints fill when brick is brought to line.
8. Do not furrow bed joints. Avoid fins of bed joints protruding into insulation space.
9. Where bricks are moved or shifted, remove and lay again in fresh mortar.
10. Keep walls continually clean, preventing grout and mortar stains. If grout runs over, clean immediately.
11. Broom stick strike joints to smooth, solid, and watertight surface with concave jointing tool.
12. Burrs or strike-over marks between horizontal and vertical tooled joints will not be accepted.
13. Install expansion joint where new brick meets existing brick wall, using 3/8” thick closed cell neoprene strips. Close joint with sealant.
14. Provide weep holes at bottom of walls at 4’ o.c. and at door heads and all other wall cavity terminations.
15. Match brick courses, include false bond brick with coursing of existing brickwork.
16. Keep air space behind brick free of motar droppings.
17. All existing brick masonry damaged, demolished or dismantled as a result of performing the work will be repaired or replaced according to the requirements of this Section; unless otherwise indicated on the Drawings or by this Section.
18. Install lintels as shown on Drawings. Extend lintels a minimum of 8” beyond edge of opening into masonry.
B. Flashing
1. Form sheet metal accurately and to the dimensions and shapes required, finishing molded and broken surfaces with true, sharp, and straight lines and angles and, where intercepting other members, coping to an accurate fit and soldering securely.
2. Unless otherwise specifically permitted by the COR, turn exposed edges back
1/2”.
3. Form, fabricate and install sheet metal so as to adequately provide for expansion and contraction in the finished work.
4. Weatherproofing:
a. Finish watertight and weathertight where so required.
b. Make lock seam work flat and true to line.
c. Make lock seams and lap seams, at least 1/2” wide.
d. Where lap seams are not soldered, lap according to pitch, but in no case less than 3”.
C. Tolerances. COR may require removal and replacement of broken or chipped units at CONTRACTOR'S expense.
3.02 ADJUSTING, CLEANING
A. Cut out, and re-point if necessary, holes and defective joints.
B. Clean brick exposed surfaces of mortar, grout, and foreign matter. Where ordinary cleaning is not adequate, lightly sandblast at no additional cost to OWNER.
