About this file
This file is a technical manual chapter detailing aircraft cleaning and washing procedures, specifically Chapter 2 of TO 1C-130A-23CL-1. The document outlines comprehensive procedures for cleaning both exterior and interior surfaces of aircraft using specific military-grade cleaning compounds (MIL-PRF-87937 and MIL-PRF-85570). It includes detailed safety requirements for personal protective equipment and emphasizes protection of sensitive equipment from water damage.
The manual provides a systematic washing sequence starting from wheel wells and progressing through mid-fuselage, forward fuselage, aft fuselage, empennage, wings, and interior areas. Key specifications include pressure limitations (30 PSI for sensitive equipment, 500 PSI for interior floor cleaning), temperature restrictions (120°F), and specific cleaning compound mixing ratios. Notable safety precautions include protecting electrical connectors, avoiding direct spray on carbon brakes and specific sensor equipment (AN/AAQ-24 LAIRCM, AN/AAR-47 MWS), and prohibiting abrasive pads on windows and transparencies. Interior cleaning procedures emphasize controlled water usage and protection of electrical components, with specific instructions for cleaning various compartments including the flight deck, cargo area, and latrine facilities.

CHAPTER 2
CLEANING AND WASHING
2.1 AIRCRAFT EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR CLEANING AND WASH-
ING PROCEDURES.
MIL-PRF-87937 and MIL-PRF-85570 cleaning compounds are toxic to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Avoid skin and eye contact.
Industrial safety goggles or face shield and chemical resistant gloves such as rubber, nitrile, neoprene, or latex shall be worn when skin contact is possible. Consult the local safety office and Bioenvironmen-tal Engineering for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) require-ments. Good, general ventilation is normally adequate.
• Do not use a direct spray of water or cleaning compound on carbon brakes, wheels, or wheel hubs. If wheel bearings are suspected of contamination, corrosion, or loss of lubricant, remove wheel bearings, and re-lubricate in accordance with applicable system specific maintenance instructions and Technical Order (TO) 4W-1-61. If carbon brakes are suspected of contamination, decontaminate per applicable system specific maintenance instructions and TO 4B-1-32.
• Avoid direct water spray (over 30 Pounds per Square Inch (PSI)) to the AN/AAQ-24 LAIRCM, transmitter assemblies, AN/AAR-47 Missle Warning System (MWS) Sensor Windows, AN/AAQ-157 IRCMS Cover, and AN/ALE-47 MWS sensor filter to prevent equipment damage.
• Do not spray water stream directly at electrical connectors/cannon plugs in wing root and fillet area.
• Abrasive pads, including melamine wash pads/Magic Eraser pads, shall not be used on windows, windshields, or acrylic transparen-cies.
NOTE
• Cleaning solutions for different areas and type soils shall follow mixing directions in accordance with TO 1-1-691, Table 3-2.

• MIL-DTL-85054 (Cor-Ban® 35 Preferred) Corrosion Preventive Compound (CPC) may have been applied to some aircraft at Depot in accordance with TO 1C-130A-23. Specific Depot application locations are identified in the TO. The CPC application appears as a transparent salmon color hard finish which may have shade differences and possible runs/sags. Chapter 7, Section 1 covers Field Level CPC application instructions and application locations.
• Current specifications and associated Qualified Products List (QPL)/Qualified Product Database (QPD) authorized for total aircraft wash are listed in TO 1-1-691.
• Ensure all areas where MIL-DTL-85054 is applied are fully cured before sealing an area.
2.1.1 Exterior Washing Sequence. Ensure all drain holes are open and operative and then proceed in accordance with the following sequence. The following materials are approved for full exterior wash: MIL-PRF-87937, Types I, III, IV, and MIL-PRF-85570, Types I, II, III, IV. See TO 1-1-691 for specific instructions on the use of these materials. Clean the exterior surface area by area, starting at the lower surface and working upward.
NOTE
All areas must be kept wet with cleaning solutions or water at all times. Rinse off all overspray of solutions.
2.1.1.1 Soil Barrier Removal. Remove prior application of soil barrier before aircraft wash in accordance with TO 1-1-691.
2.1.1.2 Wash Wheel Wells.
a. Wash wheel wells, concentrating first on the interior well structure.
b. Clean landing gear components.
c. Rinse from top to bottom.
2.1.1.3 Wash Mid-Fuselage.
NOTE
Perform in conjunction with wing wash if possible.
a. Wash the under surface first, progressing upward.
b. Rinse from top to bottom.

2.1.1.4 Wash FWD Fuselage.
a. Wash under surfaces first, progressing upward. Start at mid-fuselage and spray forward.
b. Rinse from top to bottom.
2.1.1.5 Wash Aft-Fuselage.
Do not directly spray LAIRCM Turrets/Small Laser Transmitter Assembly (SLTA). Since it may be damaged by power wash pressure over 30 PSI. Failure to observe this caution could result in equipment damage.
a. Wash exposed areas of the Fuselage Station (FS) 737 bulkhead (above the belly band) and under the ramp closure panels (LT and RT).
b. Wash the under surface first (cargo ramp and cargo door), progressing upwards.
