SECTION 08385 - SOUND CONTROL DOORS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS
A Drawings and general proVIS10ns of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A This Section includes sound control door systems consisting of swinging steel doors with frames, head and side sound seals, door bottoms, thresholds, anchors, and related accessories.
1. Where scheduled, provide sound control doors labeled and listed to meet the sound transmission class indicated.
B. Related Sections: The following Sections contain requirements that relate to this Section:
1. Division 4 Section "Unit Masonry" for building in anchors and grouting frames in masonry construction.
2. Division 5 Sections for customized hollow metal work other than doors, panels, and frames.
3. Division 8 Section "Standard Steel Doors and Frames" for standard or stock hollow metal doors and frames meeting SDI standards.
4. Division 8 Section "Flush Wood Doors" for solid-core wood doors installed in steel frames.
5. Division 8 Section "Door Hardware" for locksets, latches, and other hardware not furnished with sound control doors.
6. Division 8 Section "Glazing" for safety glass requirements.

1.3 SYSTEM PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
A Sound Rating: Provide door and frame assemblies that have been fabricated as sound-retardant units, tested according to ASTM E 90, and have the following certified Sound Transmission Qass (STC) rating determined according to ASTM E 413.
1. STC Rating: 46 minimum.
1.4 SUBMITTAIS
A General: Submit the following according to Conditions of the Contract and Division 1 Specification Sections.
B. Product data including manufacturer's specifications, details of construction, materials, dimensions, hardware preparation, gasketing, core, label compliance, sound ratings, profiles, finishes, and installation instructions.
C. Shop drawings showing fabrication, installation, anchorage, and interface of sound control doors and frames with adjacent construction. Include details of each frame type, sound seals, door bottom, threshold, and door. Indicate location and installation requirements of door and frame hardware and reinforcements.
1. Provide a schedule of doors and frames, using same reference numbers for details and openings as those on the current partial floor plan provided.
D. Test reports from qualified independent testing agency indicating and interpreting test results relative to compliance of sound ratings and fire ratings with requirements indicated. Refer to paragraph 3.3 Field Testing.
E. When requested, field test reports from qualified independent testing agency indicating and interpreting test results relative to compliance with performance requirements of installed sound control doors.
1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A Sound-Rated Door Assemblies: Provide sound control doors that are identical to assemblies whose STC ratings are determined per ASTM E 90 and ASTM E 413 by a qualified independent testing agency. A qualified independent testing agency

08385 - 2 is an acoustical laboratory accredited by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) of the National Institute for Science and Technology (NIST).
B. Single-Source Responsibility: Provide sound control doors and frames, including gasketing, thresholds, hinges (when intricate with design), and other appurtenances essential for sound control, manufactured by a single firm specializing in producing this type of work, unless otherwise acceptable to the Contracting Officer.
1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A Deliver doors and frames palletized, wrapped, or crated to provide protection during transit and job storage.
B. Examine doors and frames upon delivery for damage. Minor damages may be repaired provided refinished items are equal in all respects to new work and acceptable to the Contracting Officer; otherwise remove and replace damaged items as directed.
C. Store doors and frames at the Project site under cover. Place units on minimum 4-inch-high wood blocking. Avoid the use of nonvented plastic or canvas shelters that could create a humidity chamber. If cardboard wrappers on doors become wet, remove cartons immediately. Provide 1/4-inch spaces between stacked doors to promote air circulation.
PART 2 - PRODUCT'S
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A Available Manufacturers: This specification is based on products manufactured by Curries Company, a subsidsidiary of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions.
Products by other manufacturers meeting these requirements, will also be considered for approval, subject to the judgement of the Contracting Officer.
B. For bidding purposes only, the Contract Sum shall allow for the following installed.
1. Curries Company, acoustical series 757 Sound Doors, model AS46P, Acoustical Door System, hollow metal doors and frames with the following characteristics.

a. STC: 46
b. Leaf: Flush Single leaf.
c. Surface mounted kick plates.
d. Heavy weight hinges 4 1/2" min.
e. Heavy duty surface door closer w/ optional reinforcement plate.
2.2 MATERIALS
McGUIRE AFB
A Cold-Rolled Steel Sheets: Commercial-quality, level, carbon steel, complying with
ASTM A 366.
B. Hot-Rolled Steel Sheets and Strips: Commercial-quality, carbon steel, pickled and oiled, complying with ASTM A 569, free of scale, pitting, or surface defects.
C. Galvanized Steel Sheets: Zinc-coated carbon steel sheets of commercial quality, complying with ASTM A 526 and ASTM A 525 with A60 or G60 coating designation, mill-phosphatized.
D. Supports and Anchors: Fabricate of not less than 0.060-inch-thick (16-gage) sheet metal. Galvanize after fabrication units to be built into exterior walls, complying with ASTM A 153, Cass B.
E. Inserts, Bolts, and Fasteners: Manufacturer's standard units, except hot-dip galvanize items to be built into exterior walls, complying with ASTM A 153, Class C or D, as applicable.
F. Shop-Applied Paint: Rust-inlubitive enamel or paint, either air-drying or baking, suitable as a base for specified finish paints on steel surfaces.
G. Steel doors and frame finish coats to match the Federal Standard 595C, color number 20059, Brown.
2.3 DOORS
A General: Provide flush-design doors, minimum 1-3/4 inch thick unless otherwise indicated, constructed with welds and without seams to produce sound ratings indicated and to comply with the following:
1. Join door faces at vertical edges by welding, ground smooth, and dressed smooth to make welds invisible and provide a smooth, flush surface. Bevel both vertical edges 1/8 inch in 2 inches.

2. Reinforce tops and bottoms of doors with 0.060-inch-thick (16-gage) inverted continuous steel channels of same material as face sheets, spot welded to both face sheets. Oose top and bottom edges to provide flush construction by additional steel channels.
B. Fabricate interior doors of two cold-rolled, stretcher-leveled steel sheets not less than 0.048 inch thick (18 gage). Construct doors with smooth, flush surfaces, without visible joints or seams on exposed faces or stile edges.
2:4 FRAMES
A Form frames of minimum 0.075-inch-thick (14-gage) steel sheets, full-welded unit construction, with corners mitered, reinforced, and continuously welded full depth and width of frame. Knock-down type frames are not acceptable.
1. Fabricate exterior frames of galvanized steel sheet and interior frames of either cold- or hot-rolled sheet steel.
B. Sound Seals: Door manufacturer's gasketing system (Pemko Seal set #6) to provide sound rating indicated. Provide compression or magnetic, one-piece head and jamb seals. Provide automatic door bottoms or compression seals with cam hinges at sill with threshold (Pemko 2009APK) recommended by manufacturer.
C. Jamb Anchors: Furnish formed galvanized steel jamb anchors as required to secure frames to adjacent construction. Provide two anchors per jamb plus one additional anchor for each 18 inches or fraction thereof more than 4' -6
11 height.
1. Metal Stud Partitions: Insert type not less than 0.048 inch thick (18 gage) with notched clip to engage metal stud, welded to back of frames.
D. Floor Anchors: Provide not less than 0.075-inch-thick (14-gage) formed galvanized steel sheet anchors for each jamb as follows:
1. Monolithic Concrete Slabs: Clip-type anchors, with two holes to receive fasteners, welded to bottom of jambs and mullions.
2. Separate Topping Concrete Slabs: Adjustable type with extension clips, allowing not less than 2-inch height adjustment. Terminate bottom of frames at finish floor surface.

E. Head Anchors: Provide two anchors at head of frames exceeding 42 inches wide for frames mounted in steel stud walls.
F. Head Strut Supports: Provide 3/8-by-2-inch vertical steel struts extending from top of frame at each jamb to supporting construction above, unless frame is anchored to masonry or to other structural support at each jamb. Bend top of struts to provide flush contact for securing to supporting construction above. Provide adjustable wedged or bolted anchorage to frame jamb members.
G. Spreader Bars: Provide removable spreader bar across bottom of frames, tack-welded to jambs and mullions.
H. Frames to be fully grouted with mortar, to meet STC requirements.
2.5 HARDWARE REINFORCEMENT
A Provide steel reinforcing plates in doors and frames, drilled, and tapped for fully templated hardware according to hardware schedule and templates furnished.
Provide reinforcing required for field drilling and tapping for field-applied hardware.
1. Hinges: Minimum 0.179 inch thick (7 gage) by 1-1/2 inches wide by 6 inches longer than hinge, secured by not less than six spot welds.
2. Frames: Minimum 0.105 inch thick (12 gage) for strikes, flush bolts, closers, surface-mounted hold-open arms and panic devices.
3. Doors: Minimum 0.105 inch thick (12 gage) for lock faces, flush bolt and concealed holders; 0.075 inch thick (14 gage) for all other surface mounted hardware, including for surface mounted heavy duty door closers.
2.6 PANELS
A Provide metal panels of same materials, construction, rating, and finish as specified for doors.
2.7 GLAZING STOPS AND MOLDINGS
A Provide fixed stops and moldings welded on secure side of door, unless otherwise indicated.

B. Provide stops and moldings around glazed openings where indicated. Where multiple glazing is required, each piece of glass shall be capable of being removed independently.
C. Provide removable stops and moldings where indicated or required, formed of not less than 0.034-inch-thick (20-gage) steel sheets matching same material as door.
Form comers with butted or mitered hairline joints. Secure with cadmium- or zinc-coated countersunk flat- or oval-head machine screws spaced uniformly not more than 12 inches o.c.
D. Coordinate width of rabbet between fixed and removable stops with type of glass or panel and type of installation indicated.
E. Glass Products: Safety glass or fire-resistive glazing product meeting door's sound control and labeling requirements.
2.8 FABRICATION
A General: Fabricate units to be rigid, neat in appearance, and free from defects, warp, or buckle. Accurately form metal to required sizes and profiles. Wherever practical, fit and assemble units in the manufacturer's plant. Identify work that is not permanently factory-assembled before shipment to ensure proper assembly at the Project site. Weld exposed joints continuously; grind, fill, dress, and make smooth, flush, and invisible.
B. Exposed Fasteners: Unless otherwise indicated, provide zinc-coated, countersunk flat- or oval-head exposed screws and bolts.
C. Hardware Preparation: Factory-mortise, reinforce, drill, and tap doors and frames for fully templated hardware according to hardware schedule and templates provided by hardware supplier. Comply with applicable requirements of HMMA 830, "Hardware Preparation and Locations for Hollow Metal Doors and Frames."
1. Locate hardware as shown on final shop drawings or, if not shown, according to "Recommended Locations for Builder's Hardware for Custom Steel Doors and Frames," published by the Door and Hardware Institute.
D. Shop Primer: zinc-oxide primer paint complying with performance requirement cof FS TT-P-641, Type II.

1. Surface Preparation: Clean surfaces of mill scale, rust, oil, grease, dirt, and other foreign materials before applying galvanized zinc coating or paint finish.
2. Factory Priming for Field-Painted Finish: Apply a shop primer which complies with ANSI A224.1 acceptance criteria for field applied top coats.
E. Glazing: Factory-installed, double-glazed VJS1on panels meeting door STC requirements. Provide glass assembly recommended by manufacturer.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 PREPARATION
A. Prepare wall openings to receive door and frame assemblies according to manufacturer's recommendations after wet construction is complete and dry.
B. Frames: Prior to installation, check frames for correct size and swing and that squareness, alignment, twist, and plumbness tolerances meet HMMA 865.
3.2 INSTALI.ATION
A. General: Install all items according to manufacturer's instructions. Coordinate sequence of installation with other work to avoid delays.
B. Install frames and accessories according to shop drawings, manufacturer's data, and as specified.
1. Setting Masonry Anchorage Devices: Provide masonry anchorage devices where required for securing frames to in-place concrete or masonry construction.

a. Set anchorage devices opposite each anchor location, according to details on final shop drawings and anchorage device manufacturer's instructions. Leave drilled holes rough, not reamed, and free from dust and debris.
