About this file

This data package describes the requirements for assessing the structural integrity of tie down provisions on trailers transporting heavy equipment. It seeks details on payload dimensions and center of gravity, tie down chain specifications and attachment points, vehicle chock specifications, and the expected lateral, longitudinal, and vertical accelerations during braking, acceleration, and turning maneuvers. A coordinate system and examples are provided for contractors to populate with their proposed tie down scheme. Additionally, the Army plans to release a competitive solicitation within the near future for a five-year contract to acquire 466 Enhanced Heavy Equipment Transport System trailers. Interested vendors are encouraged to submit comments on the draft solicitation and attachments.

TRAILER TIE DOWN DATA PACKAGE FOR

STRUCTURAL ASSESSMENT OF TIE DOWN PROVISIONS

1.0 INTRODUCTION

This package describes the data requirements for a first order structural assessment of the tie down provisions. The nature of this assessment is to determine the required loads necessary to restrain the proposed payloads and to determine if the proposed tie down and rigging scheme is sufficient to restrain the proposed payloads under prescribed highway braking, accelerating, and turning events. In order to facilitate this assessment, an attempt has been made here to provide a generic data sheet to define the system parameters necessary to conduct the desired assessment. This sheet includes the minimal requirements necessary to conduct the assessment.

2.0 OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this package is to: 1) define in detail the parameters, and descriptions that are necessary to perform the tie down provisions assessment and 2) provide standardized work sheets which will facilitate the model development for the assessment.

3.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

As the government deems it necessary, this package will be updated to add data requirements as modeling methodologies and simulation technologies advance.

4.0 DISCUSSION

The following data sheet is included to capture the required data.
