About this file

This is a federal construction specification document for the USDA Forest Service, Mark Twain National Forest, detailing a drop ceiling tile installation project at two ranger district offices.

The project encompasses three base bid items: (BBI-1) Salem Office main floor demo and installation of approximately 3,300 square feet of new surface-mounted ceiling tile track system and acoustic tiles, including all offices, hallways, stairwell, lobby, break room, and bathrooms; (BBI-2) Salem Office basement demo and installation of approximately 732 square feet; and (BBI-3) Doniphan Office installation of new suspended track system and ceiling tiles in Keith Holland's Office (165 SF, requiring fire-rated tiles), small conference room (106 SF), and hallway to boiler room (85 SF). The contractor must furnish all materials, equipment, tools, and supervision, with the prime contractor superintendent required on-site during all work if subcontracted. Daily reports with photographs must be submitted to the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR). Work is restricted to normal business hours (7 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday-Friday), with limitations on building access and strict cleanup requirements. The contract specifies Armstrong "Tundra" beveled tegular tiles for Doniphan (or approved equal) and Armstrong "Fine Fissured" flat lay-in tiles for Salem (or approved equal), both white, 5/8" thick, with minimum NRC of 0.55 and CAC of 30. For Doniphan, an Armstrong "Prelude XL Exposed Tee-Heavy Duty" direct-hung suspension system is required with 30-year limited warranty; for Salem, a direct-mount grid system with maximum 2" total hang is preferred, with consideration for "CeilingMAX PVC Grid System" (10-year warranty) if necessary to maximize headspace. All light fixtures must be secured to joists or furring strips, not ceiling tiles. The contractor is responsible for confirming actual building dimensions and must submit a comprehensive construction schedule within five days of Notice to Proceed, along with product data, warranty documents, and ceiling plans prior to installation. The base contract time is 30 calendar days.

b. If grid system does not work with selected ceiling tile, inform COR and provide shortest possible drop ceiling suspensions system hangers to maximize headspace.

C. Accessories:
1. Perimeter Moldings: Same materials and finish as grid.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 PREPARATION
A. Measure each ceiling area and establish layout of acoustical tiles to balance border widths at opposite edges of each ceiling. Avoid using less-than-half-width tiles at borders unless otherwise indicated.
B. Layout openings for penetrations centered on the penetrating items.
3.2 INSTALLATION OF SUSPENSION SYSTEM
A. Install suspended acoustical tile ceilings in accordance with ASTM C636/C636M and manufacturer's written instructions and as supplemented in this section.
B. Lay out system to a balanced grid design with edge units no less than 50 percent of acoustical unit size.
C. Hang suspension system independent of walls, columns, ducts, pipes and conduit. Where carrying members are spliced, avoid visible displacement of face plane of adjacent members.
D. Where ducts or other equipment prevent the regular spacing of hangers. Reinforce the nearest affected hangers and related carrying channels to span the extra distance.
E. Support fixture loads using supplementary hangers located within 6 inches or each corner, or support components independently.
F. Install edge moldings and trim of type indicated at perimeter of acoustical ceiling area and where necessary to conceal edges of acoustical tiles.
1. Apply acoustical sealant in a continuous ribbon concealed on back of vertical legs of moldings before they are installed.
2. Do not use exposed fasteners, including pop rivets, on moldings and trim.
G. Ensure level installation with maximum 1/8 inch deviation in 12 feet.
H. Arrange directionally patterned acoustical tiles as indicated on reflected ceiling plans.
I. Coordinate ceiling installation with all MEP trades prior to placing any tiles.
J. Ensure all grid openings properly match device sizes and layouts.
K. Direct-Mount:
1. Establish centerline layout and fasten perimeter wall channels to studs.
2. Install main tees directly to substrate using approved direct-mount clips.
3. Insert cross-tees into main tees until audible click is heard, confirming full engagement.
4. Shim clips as necessary to maintain level grid when substrate is uneven.
5. Ensure tiles fit within limited clearance typical of direct-mount systems.
3.3 INSTALLATION OF ACOUSTICAL UNITS
A. Install acoustical units in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
B. Fit acoustical units in place, free from damage edges or other defects detrimental to appearance and function.
C. Fit border trim neatly against abutting surfaces. Reinstall salvaged ceiling trim. Install new trim where is missing.
D. Install acoustical units level, in uniform plane, and free from twist, warp, and dents.
E. Cutting Acoustical Units:
1. Make field cut edges of same profile as factory edges and field paint.
