GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 DESCRIPTION.
The 150 pound (lb.) wheeled, liquified gas fire extinguisher is a portable fire extinguisher capable of being towed at speeds up to 15 Miles Per Hour (MPH) over a level, paved surface. The wheeled fire extinguisher is used to provide large scale, fire protection where mobility is needed to reach local, separated, multiple fire hazard areas and combat flammable liquid, electrical or carbonaceous fires. The unit is charged with 150 lbs of Bromochlorodifluoromethane (BCF), Halon 1211 fire protection agent and pressurized with Nitrogen (N2) to 200±20 Pounds-force Per Square Inch, Gauge (PSIG) to facilitate agent discharge. Basically, the 150 lb, wheeled, liquified gas, fire extinguisher consists of a hose with support, agent storage cylinder assembly and carriage for transportation.
1.2 HOSE WITH SUPPORT.
The hose, which provides mobility to the operator when fighting a fire, has a nozzle valve assembly at its end to permit flow control. The hose support is used to mount the hose and nozzle. The extinguisher hose is looped around the hose support and the nozzle valve assembly is held by the nozzle mount and clips. Some extinguishers may have an upgraded hose rack/ nozzle mount which utilizes a retaining ring and no longer uses the hose clips.
1.3 AGENT STORAGE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY.
The agent storage cylinder assembly is equipped with the cylinder discharge valve with safety outlet, pressure valve, and agent level gauge. The cylinder assembly is steel fabricated, conforms to the Department of Transportation 4BW240 Speci-fication, and has an internal volume of 4,350 cubic inches, nominal. The cylinder assembly is used to store the extinguishing agent under pressure. The cylinder assembly mounts between the carriage and hose support assemblies.

CHAPTER 2
PREPARATION FOR USE
2.1 UNPACKING AND HANDLING.
2.1.1 New Unit.
• The new 150 pound (lb.), wheeled, liquified gas, fire extinguisher will be received at the operation site as a completely assembled, uncharged and unpressurized unit. A tag will be attached which says: “CAUTION This extinguisher is not charged. Follow charging instructions in service manual before putting to use. Remove tag only after extinguisher is properly charged.” Special unpacking procedures are not required. When handling the fire extinguisher, observe the normal precautions used when handling equipment to be pressurized and avoid damage that might occur when dropping it.
• Cylinder and valve assemblies from the factory have been internally dried and contain dry nitrogen at 5 Pounds-force per Square Inch, Gauge (PSIG) or slightly above. The discharge valve should remain closed until the extin-guisher is charged.
2.1.2 Used Unit. The fire extinguisher will be received at the maintenance site as a completely assembled empty or partially filled, pressurized unit. The unit may or may not be packaged. Unpacking and handling procedures are the same as for a new unit, as applicable.
2.2 PREPARATION FOR OPERATION.
The fire extinguisher is designed to withstand environmental exposure; therefore, the unit should be stored in a convenient, readily detected location. New units need to be charged with Halon 1211 and Nitrogen (N2) before they are ready to use.
Refer to Service Maintenance Paragraph 5.3.
• To ensure used units are ready for operation, visually inspect the pressure gauge and agent level gauge. The pressure gauge should be in the green zone, 200±20 PSIG range and the pointer in the agent level gauge should indicate agent level at the full mark, 150 lbs.
• Temperature of extinguisher can affect pressure gauge reading and agent level gauge reading. Nominal “properly charged” marking on both gauges is correct for 70 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) (21 degrees Celsius (°C)). Generally as temperature goes up the two gauge readings go up and conversely low temperature results in low gauge readings.
• The relative pressure gauge versus temperature reading for the Amerex 150 lb. Halon wheeled extinguisher is as follows:
Temperature °F: -40 32 70 °F 120 135 Pressure Gauge PSIG: 127 168 200 263 288 Temperature °C: 140 0 21 °C 49 57
• It is best to inspect gauge readings when unit temperature is near 70 °F. The chart above and the chart below are of use in estimating unit pressure and agent fill conditions at other temperatures.
• The Pressure-Temperature Chart is attached to the cylinder top. The minimum PSIG and maximum gauge readings are found directly to the left of where a vertical line from the selected temperature cuts through the two curves. The gauge reading will be between the minimum and maximum points on a properly charged unit.
2-1
• The cylinder contains Halon 1211 agent in mostly liquid form. Agent level gauge uses a float to sense liquid level and position gauge point. Height of liquid agent above the inside bottom of container is as follows:
Temperature -40 °F 70 °F 122 °F 135 °F Agent Height 15.22 inches 16.47 inches 17.79 inches 17.86 inches Temperature -40 °C 21 °C 50 °C 57 °C
• The liquid level height changes +1.40 to -1.25 inches from the nominal 70 °F position over the operating tempera-ture range.
• Temperatures of 90 °F and above will cause the agent level indicator on a properly charged unit to read well up into the overcharged area. If confirmation of a proper amount of Halon 1211 charge is required, weigh the unit and compare with the gross weight shown on the extinguisher label.
• Temperatures below 40 °F will cause the agent level indicator to show below the FULL mark. Units in cold environments may be check weighted or brought inside for warm up to determine a satisfactory agent fill weight.
• Weighing the unit on a scale is the most accurate method to determine if an extinguisher is properly charged.

CHAPTER 3
THEORY OF OPERATION
3.1 EXTINGUISHING AGENT.
3.1.1 Halon 1211. The extinguishing agent Halon 1211 (Bromochlorodifluoromethane (BCF)) is a halogenated hydrocar-bon chemically identified as (BCF). Its chemical symbol is CBrC1F2. Halon 1211 is a colorless, faintly sweet-smelling, electrically nonconductive gas, at ambient conditions having an approximate boiling point of 25 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) (-3.4 degrees Celsius (°C)) and a freezing point of -256 °F (-160 °C). Halon 1211 is a liquified gas under its own vapor pressure in a closed container at ambient temperatures.
3.1.1.1 Halon 1211 is a clean, multipurpose fire fighting agent. Effective for Class ABC fires, Halon 1211 extinguishes by chemically interrupting the fire chain reaction, the continuing combination of oxygen, fuel and heat. Halon 1211 does not extinguish by depleting the oxygen supply. Discharged as an 85 percent liquid/15 percent vapor stream, Halon 1211 offers long discharge range, which helps the operator to stay at a safe distance while fighting a fire. The liquid/vapor discharge allows Halon 1211 to flow around obstructions when extinguishing tough-to-reach fires.
3.1.1.2 Halon 1211 has a low level of toxicity. It has been approved for use in portable fire extinguishers by Underwriters Laboratories in Standard Number 1093 and in local applications by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in Standard Number (No.) 12B (1990 edition) and NFPA403 (2003 edition). The Federal Aviation Administration Advisory Circular 20-42B also recommends the use of Halon 1211 portables on commercial aircraft.
Although Halon 1211 vapor has a low toxicity, its decomposition products can be hazardous. On decomposition, Halon 1211 has a characteristic sharp, acrid odor, even in concentrations of only a few parts per million. The odor characteristic provides a built-in warning system for the agent and at the same time creates a noxious irritating atmosphere for those who are in the hazard area during and following a fire. Leave and/or ventilate the area after fighting the fire.
3.1.1.3 Physical characteristics of Halon 1211 are indicated in Table 3-1.
3.2 EQUIPMENT OPERATION.
In a charged extinguisher ready for operation, the extinguishing agent is stored under pressure in the cylinder assembly and retained in the cylinder by the cylinder discharge valve. Operating the cylinder discharge valve lever opens the discharge valve allowing pressurized extinguishing agent to flow from the cylinder via the cylinder syphon tube through the discharge valve to the extinguisher hose and nozzle valve assembly. With the nozzle valve closed, the extinguisher nozzle with hose attached can be carried by hand to the fire hazard. With pressurized extinguishing agent up to the nozzle, opening the nozzle valve will permit agent flow through the nozzle to the fire. Pictographic operating instructions on the extinguisher illustrate how to put it into operation. The fire extinguisher includes a pressure gauge and safety outlet. The pressure gauge indicates the cylinder internal pressure. In the eventuality that a high cylinder pressure buildup should occur, the safety outlet is designed to relieve at 400 to 500 PSIG.

4.1.2 Discharge Valve and Lever. The discharge valve, which includes pressure gauge and safety outlet, is used to retain the agent contents in the cylinder, see Figure 4-1. The Discharge Valve includes a hand operated lever that operates the Discharge Valve to allow or stop agent flow from the cylinder to the hose and nozzle valve assembly. The safety outlet relieves pressure at 400 to 500 Pounds-force per Square Inch, Gauge (PSIG).
4.1.3 Nozzle Valve and Lever. The nozzle valve is located at the free hose end and is used to retain the agent in the hose, see Figure 4-1. The nozzle valve includes a hand operated lever that operates the nozzle valve to allow or stop the discharge of agent through the extinguisher nozzle.
4.1.4 Nozzle. The nozzle is located on the outlet side of the nozzle valve, see Figure 4-1.
4.1.5 Agent Level Gauge. The agent level gauge provides a visual display of the level of liquified Halon 1211 in the cylinder.
4.1.6 Pressure Valve. The pressure valve is located on the discharge valve, see Figure 4-1. The valve is used during cylinder assembly service recharge.
4.2 OPERATION.
4.2.1 Pre-Operation Procedure. Transport the fire extinguisher to the fire hazard area and locate the extinguisher within the scope of the 50 foot long hose. At the fire hazard site, position fire extinguisher in vertical position with wheels off ground.
NOTE
The extinguisher may be operated in either the vertical or reclined position. However, the unit in the reclined position will discharge less agent.
4.2.2 Operation Procedure. Perform unit operation, see Figure 4-1, as follows:
Make certain the discharge nozzle is closed (down position) and the extinguisher is upright before beginning the following steps. Failure to comply could result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health hazards.
a. Pull on pin to remove and open tank discharge valve by rotating (pulling) valve lever at top of tank toward the hose 90 degrees. The hose is now pressurized.
b. Pull the nozzle with lever in the CLOSED position from the hose storage mount and extend the hose toward the fire.
NOTE
Stand at least 30 feet away from fire before opening the nozzle valve.
c. Grasp nozzle firmly and aim nozzle at base of fire.
4-1
Be prepared for backward reaction (movement) of the nozzle as discharge begins. Failure to comply could result in damage to, or destruction of, equipment or loss of mission effectiveness.
d. Hold hose and nozzle firmly to allow for discharge recoil. Open nozzle by pulling handle toward you.
The concentrated agent and the by-products resulting from application to a fire are toxic when inhaled. After use, leave the area and ventilate well before returning. Symptoms of over-exposure to pure Halon 1211 are: dizziness, impaired coordination, and reduced mental acuity. Persons suffering from over-exposure should be immediately removed to fresh air; if unconscious, give respiration and obtain medical help. Use of adrenaline or similar drugs should be avoided.
e. Sweep agent across base of fire using side to side motion and move to the best positions to extinguish the fire.
f. On the flight line and in open areas not inside of buildings, standby, up wind if possible, to determine if the fire is definitely extinguished. Continue to man the extinguisher until relieved by installation fire protection personnel.
g. In hangers or buildings, immediately evacuate the building and standby outside to provide information to arriving installation fire protection personnel. Ventilation of the building and safe re-entry is an installation fire protection responsibility.
4.3 SHUTDOWN.
Always discharge the Halon residue from the hose when shutting down the extinguisher. Do not use the hose as a storage container as over-pressurization and deterioration of the hose may occur.
After extinguishing fire, push nozzle lever to CLOSED position to stop agent flow. Stand by to determine if the fire is definitely extinguished. To shutdown extinguisher, rotate discharge valve lever 90 degrees to mechanical stop to close discharge valve. Pull nozzle lever to OPEN position to discharge agent residue from hose. With hose empty, push nozzle lever to CLOSED position. Coil extinguisher hose onto hose bracket and position nozzle into mount and bracket clips, see Figure 1-1 and Figure 5-5.
4.4 POST FIRE OPERATION.
Weigh tank to determine amount discharged then transport to storage or maintenance area for service. For detailed Halon temperature-pressure relationships, see Paragraph 2.2. Replace seal (Figure 7-1, 1) and wire (Figure 7-1, 2) before returning fully charged unit to use. Halon 1211 evaporates rapidly. Therefore, no cleanup is required unless moisture or a high temperature was present at the area of application. However, ventilation should always be provided to remove the vapors. If moisture or a high temperature was present, use the following clean-up procedures:
NOTE
After a discharge of Halon, allow three minutes for the agent level gauge to stabilize before making a final agent level determination.
a. After fire has been extinguished, purge area and surface with clean dry air (dust free low moisture content compressed air).

SODIUM BICARBONATE, MIL-C-87936 7
b. Wash contaminated surface with a ten percent solution of Sodium Bicarbonate, Specification O-S-576 or one part MIL-C-87936, Type I to three parts water. Apply solution with a brush or rag. Allow solution to remain on surface until all bubbling stops. Remove solution by wiping with a damp sponge or cloth, rinsing with water.
